Performance and character week 6: 2D child having fun walk 3.0: 1/11/18:

During my free session I worked on my third iteration of my child walk exercise using 2D animation. Johny's feedback on my second version of this exercise suggested that I needed to work on the foot placements of my animation. The way I could do this was to place in the guide a train track to help with the foot placements. So I decided to implement this in Adobe Animate.


I decided to do further research into how children walk, as my first two were of toddlers running/walking which made it hard to plot out feet placements and leg movements in the frames. So I looked at some reference footage and found one of a young seven to eight year old doing a run and jump event at a sports day.

Learning from this I decided to translate this into my animation. This helped me when looking at the Animators Survival kit to plot out the key poses. The poses were then spread out and shot twice for a steady pace of speed. Learning from the past attempts when doing the jump I angled the body that I drew in the shot and added the limbs afterwards. I felt I made the right choice with this idea. The end walk I decided to reference from my past attempt as the child walks away pretending to be a plane.


I learned that by copying the frames from that exercise into the current version helped me draw the new poses and in-betweens. One element that I felt the animation was lacking was the body moving side to side or showing some rocking in the walk as I learned from the reference footage theres a slight rock in the leg movements. My first impressions of the run showed that it was a grown man running instead of a child but after looking back at the reference footage it showed it seemed right for a seven year old.








Looking back I would think Johny's advice of using the train track idea helped very well in planning out the foot placements. I was beginning to see the sense in using this idea of perspective and the train tracks to plan out the movements and feet placements. This is something I shall consider use of in the future. Areas that I think I could've improved upon was the movement of the body in the run showing the hips moving and perhaps the shoulders too a little.


In conclusion I am pleased with what I have achieved and hope that the feedback I receive will help me improve or refine this exercise in the future.


In future I shall try and consider the body's weight and movement in different walks and body builds.
