Creative Collaboration: Week 6: 2/11/18: Team meeting, Concept art and alterations.

In Week 6's session of Creative collaboration our team discussed and reviewed recent events with the project such as the concept art and thumbnail storyboards.

Stephen our group leader and I discussed the matter of my concept work regarding my over usage of perspective. I felt I didn't understand what he was trying to tell me as you use perspective in environment design. It became clearer when Stephen explained that the artwork didn't keep within the perspective lines which we looked at in the Art of THE INCREDIBLES book that I brought in to get a better idea of what Stephan was referring to. He suggested I shouldn't try and get all the background elements into one shot, which he pointed out in my park concept background.

I was beginning to see what he was talking about, and the importance of using reference material in artwork which was something I should've remembered from the script to screen module last year and in my own experiences. I felt that I had forgotten what I'd learned about concept art in that moment. He advised me when doing the football field concept I should do half the field and have people playing, and I understood what he was telling me.

One other piece of advice he gave to me was to make my backgrounds and art style more realistic as my style doesn't change from cartoon like to an actual human life drawing face. I began to see he had a point as I remembered that in terms of comic books the artist does the cover rather differently than how he did the frames and contents. Stephan showed me an example of this and I made a mental note on trying to add some life drawing elements to my work.

In terms of the project we reviewed Kieran's new thumbnail pieces which were what we had in mind for the project. Recently Stephan had edited the script adding elements such as the camera angles and how the facts appear in the animation. I feel this alteration placed more detail into the script giving us a clear idea of how the animation would play out when finished and I could better visualise it in my mind for scene ideas.

One element we needed to consider was the car scenes as Kieran had the bee going under the car through the underside. I did feel this was a good idea but we needed to consider the time frame, so this may need to be altered. Stephan explained that for the time being the rollercoaster and whack a mole obstacles were removed from the script for the time being as deleted scenes, given how this seemed to have less potential as a scene in the film.

As the meeting progressed, I felt relieved that we were beginning to make progress on the production pipeline. Our overall aim was to have the concepts and thumbnails done by next Friday so that we could then proceed into full on production. I knew I would have to work on the concepts and style frame over the weekend which seemed a simple enough task to perform.

Stephan had recently made changes to our schedule such as the animatic being replaced with a pre-visualisation piece which made sense given we were working with a 3D environment and a more 3D animatic would make sense.

Looking back over this session I feel that we were beginning to make more progress as a team in this module. I now understand the concept of what Stephan was asking me to do with the concept artwork and only use perspective drawing when it is needed and to look at more life like painting/ illustration work for my own style and portfolio.

In hindsight I had a lot of things to consider in terms of my artwork and perhaps should've brought up the matter of animating the logo design in after effects and what time length it should run for given we could be doing a 1 minute long film.

In conclusion I now have a better insight into Stephan's feedback of my concept sketches and intend to put it to use over the weekend. I shall also consider the advice of going for a more realistic style of art in my own style and perhaps the style of the digital concept work.

In future I shall ask for further details of what is being asked of me in my concept artwork and see if I could find a specific steer.
