On my Thursday free period session I did some more work on my background concept sketches for the Beelive animation group. I was getting the impression from Stephan that I shouldn't approach perspective drawing without reason so I decided to try a different approach.
To help me in my work I looked at Concept art based magazines to give me inspiration on doing my work. I noticed in some concept work like the buildings or environments they were laid out in a 3D map like way so I decided to apply the same element in my concept work for the back gardens which the bee would fly through as it returns home. This seemed to work well in my opinion as I considered the fact we were working with a 3D based environment so this translated better when laying everything out. I even considered some creative licence such as the use of the dog house in backyard one given the dog was one of the obstacles in that particular scene.
I felt that Stephan and Kieran would agree with the use of this element. In terms of perspective drawing I used this on drawings such as the shed interior and the house of mirrors. The house of mirrors part of the animation was simple as the bee would be flying around a maze of mirrors even going down corridors hence the use of one point perspective. I referenced the mirror shapes from reference images I found on google and saved to my phone to use and sketch from.
The garden shed was done in this perspective to help me better lay out the shed and its contents. Stephan pointed out on Tuesday that the shed needed to be more cluttered and so I looked on google and Pinterest for sheds and what they could contain such as pitchforks, watering cans and plant pots for example. Being the owner of a shed myself I remembered that my mother keeps her bike in a shed so I made sure to include a bike and to later on take reference photos of said shed.
In my work I worked from the script as it helped me to picture the scene in my mind and how it may perform. I showed photos of this and some character concept ideas to the group chat for feedback. Stephan's impression seemed to indicate I was using too much perspective drawing without reason and that I was meant to do concept art not experimenting with angles.
I felt that this feedback was questioning my ability as an artist and I took this rather personal. However I remembered from the Star Wars animation pipeline film we were shown last year that different approaches were taken when doing the concept ideas and the director would choose the one to use in the film. That was what I was trying to show in my work.
Looking back I would think I did a good job on my concept work, but its clear some refinement and understanding is still required for my work. I feel perhaps I wasn't getting a clear grasp of what Stephan was telling me in terms of "using perspective without reason." and perhaps needed to be shown an example of what he's asking for in the concept work before I work digitally. In hindsight I could see his point about some of my work such as the shed and floor plans but I feel that I used them with good reason.
In conclusion I will need to ask for further details and shown an example of what type of concept background work to do so that I can better start on the digital artwork side of the project. In future I shall look for further details before proceeding forward with the design process in my concept work.
