After our after effects workshop our Bee Live group assembled for a team meeting regarding our tasks for this week. Over the weekend I looked at creating some background concept art for our project and I showed some rough ideas to the group. Whilst they liked the art style Stephan suggested I should use the script to help me do my work, which as a concept artist I should have remembered from the animation pipeline lesson.
However I explained I could not see the script as I wasn't provided a link to the google drive where it was stored so Stephan provided me with one. Kieran's task was to work on thumbnails for our storyboard, and whilst these thumbnails were good they did have a few areas for improvement. One element that Stephan picked up on was that the thumbnails didn't show where the bee went from one scene to another as there was no in-between area of the bees journey I picked up on this as well.
I felt that Kieran wasn't best explaining the reason why these thumbnails didn't have any of these elements in the thumbnails and he told us that he couldn't add these as he was busy with other work. I could tell that Stephan was getting a little annoyed by this lack of progress. Though Kieran wanted to do storyboarding in this team I felt perhaps we'd be further along in our work if I did the thumbnails instead, which Stephan did understand but we needed to make Kieran see we were on a tight schedule.
I wouldn't normally doubt a team members capability but I believe with some clear instructions and understanding we can get our project more on track.
In terms of my concept art I decided that if it would help I could map out my work first before doing the digital version. Stephan told me it was entirely up to me but to try and simplify my house of mirrors design as he could do more to it when doing a background in Maya for the pre-Visualisation animatic. I understood the instructions and could see the sense in his advice.
Looking back on the meeting I would think perhaps some of us needed a better clear understanding of the schedule we'd laid out for our project in order to get it ready for the December preview. I feel perhaps our focus is on our priorities in the project and what's the most urgent in my case it would be the turnaround and the background concepts. In the feedback I knew that I needed to work on my structuring and how to map out my backgrounds.
In conclusion I shall reflect on the given feedback to my work and apply it to better refine my work on background art and turn around. In future I shall remember to look at the project script for guidance on doing my backgrounds as the script/screenplay is essentially the brief for the concept artists to work from as I learned from last years Animation Context and intro to making of.
