The aim of week 3's session of Creative Collaboration, was to show our overall ideas for the team project our teams agreed upon and create a hypothesis for our story. We took an exercise in answering 14 questions. In our group now consistent of three which was myself, Stephan and Kieran we did find it hard at first to answer the questions as some of them had the same answer and we couldn't very well explain our answers.
However we were able to answer a majority of the questions and then looked at some of the design ideas we did over the week such as my concept designs for our Bee character. I felt that some of the questions that Stephan asked me about my designs were rather hard to answer but his overall thoughts were that they looked a little cute but that was because I was considering the target audience which were younger children. He suggested that I do some life drawing studies of bees at a different angles to best help my understanding of perspective and designs.
I felt that this feedback was helpful and it was to be expected as these were first attempts at character design and would help further develop my ideas.
One thing I decided to look at was something Annabeth, our tutor suggested and that's how others have used bees in campaigns before. So I looked on the internet for campaigns and commercials using bees and in some of them I saw how they used different kinds of animation such as simple motion graphics and green screen animation which was near what we wanted to do using 3D and 2D animation together. I remembered a quote from the making of Walking with Dinosaurs and that was "There are lessons to be learned from those who have tried before." There was a lesson in this.
One thing I considered was how we would present the facts about bees in the animation and so I suggested an element from Planet Dinosaur which was something we would consider in the future. As the other groups presented their ideas I learned that some of them had already done some pre animation work which made me feel if I should do something similar when completing my life drawing task. I did like the ideas and themes that the other groups wanted to explore.
Looking back on this session while there were a few disagreements and not understanding what one team member was trying to put across this was an element in team work learning to communicate our points. I feel we could've improved on the questions exercise as some of the answers we suggested were becoming riddles and hard to grasp.
After our session we called a meeting and proposed our tasks for this week such as taking reference photos of potential locations, introduced to a to do list application and doing scripts and concept drawings. I feel that the team work will come into its element when we do the pre production phase of the project. Next week we would need a pitch for our project and perhaps consider if other companies or campaigns will want to use our work when we do the preview in December.
In future I shall ask for further details in my design work from Stephan and see if there was anything he wanted to include in the designs or see if he wants a test animation of the rigging.
