Animation context week 13: 16/5/18: Essay draft 5, magazine layout and final ideas:

The following day of week 13 my prime directive was to finish my Animation context essay and have a final draft that I can submit for the module this week. I began with looking over the fourth essay draft to refine some areas and cut somethings down to the word count. One thing that came to mind were the titles of the case studies. I wondered if these were part of the word count and came to the conclusion that they weren't so I cut them out of the essay, which lowered the word count considerably. I then worked on the magazine layout and decided to scan in some images from some Disney art of books I had brought in to help me with images and get quotes on certain elements of art such as perspective. I felt this would add more of an angle to the visual development section of the essay.

However the printer wouldn't scan the whole page of the book or at times wouldn't scan it at all, so I looked for some elements of the pages or images from the book on google which thankfully I was able to find and add to the essay. I was able to talk to Johny and discuss some things about the essay and he mentioned that I was doing substantial work on the project and that it was discussing the right subject for the first years,  but suggested that I add or re write a few elements such as the quote from Paul Wells and elements of complementary colours and directing them to the Adobe color site. I felt that this was adding to the word count which did get me concerned but Johny assured me it was okay to go over word count a little bit.

He suggested that I refer to the creative skill set site for elements on being a concept artist, I did try to refer to it for my conclusion which did help a little. He liked the overall appearance of the magazine and I felt impressed that I used my references and inspiration well in bringing together this final piece. I was even tempted to get it concerted into an A5 booklet as a physical submission. In the creative thinking area he suggested I used the diagrams and that it was okay to use quotes from Wikiapedia. This had made me feel conflicted as at the start of the module he said to "avoid Wikipedia" and to say use Wikipedia was even more confusing. I took this under advisement and he
showed me what reference to use in images such as the perspective diagram from an art book I had at home.

Using this new found knowledge, I set work on refining and improving my final piece. I felt that I was making progress on the essay at last, and that I may get it submitted on time. In the Paul wells quote I decided to change it as I looked from the eBook I quoted it from but couldn't see it. I was worried as this was the point where I was discussing the artists own style and feel to concept art. However in that moment I had a brainwave I decided to use a quote from Walt Disney himself as it seemed appropriate. I found a quote that suited the section best and it was "The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique."

I felt this spoke to the reader more and to me as an artist so I switched out the quotes, this did affect the word count slightly but I removed some unnecessary text to compensate. Referencing the quote though was difficult so I referred to the Harvard Reference PDF and found the reference that I needed. It was rather difficult to reference the images in the article as I couldn't find this reference in the PDF, so I looked to the internet for something similar and I found what it was I needed.

I finished referencing my work and then added the references and sources to the bibliography list below. I added the new text to the article and I felt the piece was finally complete. So I concerted it to a PDF ready for submission.

Looking back on the essay task, it hasn't been an easy one to undertake, but I persisted and worked on none the less. If I could do this over again I would've done things differently. I would've possibly done my writing and research  little earlier to give me time to refine and perfect my drafts to reach a final version ahead of time. I felt I needed to make a good impression on my work and used the best elements possible. However in hindsight I should've double checked some of my sources of quotes as the Paul Wells quote whilst good for the 360 project didn't seem to work well in the essay, but I simply adapted and improvised on the suggestions given.

In conclusion I was rather pleased with my Animation Context essay as a whole and look forward to writing more in the future to better understand the academic essays. In future I shall review and look at some of my quotes to see if they are of any use or link to the subject that I am trying to show in my work.
