In week 10 of Intro to the making of we were shown the details of handing in our work for the module and a guide into creating show reels for our module work and possible CV into industry. We were shown a link on Blackboard that disclosed the hand in details for the module such as the blog of all our activities from the mini briefs, making of video and our show reels. I felt this was a detailed check list but I would still need to work on the making of video along with my essay and show reel. This did make me rather anxious and worried about doing another video task and given this was the earliest hand in module for May this was a growing concern.
One other concern was submitting the blog as a PDF as the Blog booker we'd used in the past didn't accept entries in 2017 unless we created an account. However Annabeth informed us we could still submit the URL address for our blogs so she could look at them.
We were given some guide lines to the show reel we would be making. I had previously created a first version attempt using some of the best work from my modules playing along side one of my favourite songs Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede. This is my first version.
We looked at other examples of showreels done by university students, to give us some perspective in what work to select and it would act as a personal business card to our chosen field of practice in Animation. The showreel would be about a minute long and we would reflect on our practice and show 5 of our best pieces of work. However in this we had to avoid the use of commercial music as Annabeth told us it would distract the viewer from our work to make them think of something else. For example in my first showreel it had music from Guardians of the Galaxy, and when the industry looked at the show reel it would make them think of that, and divert them from the show reels purpose.
I felt rather embarrassed that I didn't consider that element but then again this was a first attempt and I didn't know much about showreels. We needed to consider what animation company we were trying to approach with our business card. I hadn't considered which animation company to approach but Annabeth told us not to worry and to try not and think of this as an exercise and look at what company we may wish to approach with research.
The bottom line is the showreels contents should be our best work and animation that is deeply personal for us. We were shown some sources of music files for us to use, such as the sound library we used for the Aesop's fables, the BBC's Sound effects Library, and the Youtube audio library which I wasn't aware existed. This was something that demanded looking into, not just for the showreel, but for the video essay.
In terms of the video essay, I decided to start work on the opening sequence for my essay. The idea being that I would do the essay in sections such as the green screening files I would do them as one whole section in the essay then all the sections would be brought together into one premier file to add effects and transitions. The opening sequence in my script would be comprised of animations of the past and present, including some personal favourites, Frozen, Road to Eldorado, Lion King, Voltron, Wallace and Gromit and The Little Mermaid. I opened premier and edited each clip down to some of the best elements such as the ending of Voltron's transformation sequence or the Ice Bridge sequence in the Let it go song.
The ending of the opening would be the end of the reprise of Part of your world as that would be the scene where it would fade out in the dialogue to then transfer to the green screen footage. However halfway through I was conflicted on what to do for music at the time whether I should keep the sounds playing in the clips or to use music. I would need to approach this later on as the next step was putting together my Pecha Kucha presentation for next week. However I felt this was once again conflicting priorities.
Looking back on the session I felt I was starting to put my essay together, however I was also feeling that I didn't stick to my intended task for making more progress in my essay. I've decided that over this week I would need to prioritise my work and do elements like the Pecha Kucha over the weekend along with other work that wasn't deemed a priority at the time. The fact I was held back by my conflict of priorities was a lingering issues as the Video essay was my priority for the week but again conflicting agendas makes it all the more difficult. This is followed by the need of a making of video and seeing as how I had nothing but pictures so far I would need to consider adding footage for my work.
In hindsight I should've asked Annabeths opinion on the opening sequence music and dialogue to see which would work the best for my essay. However I may take a look at the music library's shown to use today and see if this could provide some insight into the music options for my video essay. In conclusion I would think that while I have made a start on composing my video essay I would need to work on doing more to it and on transitions for my time travel element. However I was shown how to do green screening in Premier pro by Annabeth so I shall start doing more work on this at home for independent study.
I know also that I make sure that Include the right elements of my animation work for my showreel and to look over my blog to make sure I didn't miss anything out in my work and see what animators influenced my own choices.
In future I shall look at my work and see which element requires my utmost attention and make that a number one priority, however I know now that the essay is my main concern at the moment and must work hard to put it together, and get it ready for submission.
