Animation context week 9: 16/4/18: Essay Feedback and refinements.

In week 9's session of Animation Context we had received feedback on our magazine essays, and today we would be acting on that feedback and refining our essays. In my feedback it would seem I had a lot to refine such as the value of the subject and a clearer introduction to the essay subject. Johny introduced to us a new source of research called JSTOR which was an online site containing academic papers. Johny informed us that in our essays we had to include at least one academic paper reference, and in my case he showed me a paper called Mine-en-scene, Art in Motion  by Maureen Furniss. I felt that this had a lot of words to look at and wasn't sure what to look at, thankfully Johny suggested looking at the Image design section.

This was a lot to take in and I felt that it was adding more to the essay possibly jeopardising the 1500 word requirement in the brief. However this was something that needed to be added and if this would help achieve a good grade I decided to explore the possibilities. I also felt that this site could aid me in my animation history video essay development. This was to aid us for next semester as we would be doing sustained research which was in more detailed which did scare me a little as I was still trying to figure out academic writing and research.

We later set to work on refining our essays with the given feedback, and Johny had me paired with Aiden and Alisha who's subjects were also based around the work of concept art and it seemed a good idea to get feedback from others on the same subject to better refine our work. We looked at each others work and I noticed in both of them they had a small intro to what the subject was which explains my feedback about having an intro to the subject. I could see that Aidens had structure and Alishas seemed to include some technical information.

On my essay Alisha suggested the use of technical information about colour such as which software would be of better use in the subject and that was something I hadn't considered, but given this was a draft feedback such as this was expected. Upon our meeting of the minds I set to work on refining my essay and added an intro to my subject and why I was telling it. However I couldn't help but wonder if what I was doing responded to my given feedback so I showed this to Johny for a second opinion. He told me that my intro needed more work as I stated I was following it as a career making it revolve around me instead of describing it to first years.

He reminded me of the given feedback and that in the conclusion I should reflect on the points made and give five top tips for the first years on the subject and how to approach it such as get educated etc.  During this I downloaded some papers from JSTOR on the matter of animation history to aid in the development of my video essay and for my voice over scenes as this was one of my main priorities.

Looking back on this session it would seem that I had a lot of refinement to do on my essay, and that there were some elements to revisit. I would do somethings differently, one of which would've been to talk to Johny about my given feedback as I couldn't understand some of the words that were being said and perhaps some detail on what was needed would've helped in my work development. This way I could better refine the essay. I would also showed Alisha and Aiden my work to get their opinions on the rewritten subject to see if I was responding to what they suggested and if I was going in the right direction.

In hindsight I should've asked Johny about the feedback immediately after my meeting with Aiden and Alisha to see what he meant in the feedback. This would've helped considerably in rewriting the essay and help me further develop my magazine article design/mock up for a final piece. However having moved the personal view down into the conclusion I would think that I was proceeding according to the feedback.

In conclusion I would think that the feedback on the essay was most helpful, but perhaps a second opinion on what was being described would further help in the matter. In future I shall ask for a second opinion on the feedback to gain more insight and detail on what was being said to get a more clearer idea on what to apply to the essay and give it further development.

I shall continue to refine and develop my essay to add to my magazine final piece and work further on the mock up piece so that I can develop a final design.
