Week 8's session of Animation Context upon our return after the easter break was a session of amnesty, a review of our essays we submitted, catch up on the module thus far and a session of indesign work. We were given brief reviews of our essay work and I was feeling relieved that we would be getting feedback after we were told we'd get it over the easter break, our individual feedback would be found on Blackboard. However, given Johny's description it would seem that some of us would have some refinements, this was given to us through looking at a list of variables.
- Value: Stated the importance and value of the subject to the audience
- Sense of Inquiry: Use a range of sources to sustain and support the written element.
- Structure and form: Is the format suitable for the content eg tutorial, Chronological writing
- Style and writing voice: The writing must be of a high quality academic writing but also needs to be engaging consider the voice (formal/informal)
- Design; Create and design a layout that is suitable for the desired content, carefully consider the image to text ratio (balance out the scales) Establish the in page hierarchy, typography, racks and grids.
As Johny described to us the features we had to consider for our articles I felt this was something to consider and so took note of everything to give me some ideas for my work. However one thing was brought up that was a cause for concern and that was we had only six weeks before the hand in date of all our modules and that if we didn't make a pass mark we couldn't progress to the next year which had gotten me concerned and afraid for the quality of my work. One thing I forgot one the easter break was the character design exercise but I remembered a character mock up I made whilst watching Guardians of the Galaxy and all that was needed was the description, which was a relief.
The indesign element was to create our designs for our magazines, I hadn't done any mock ups due to conflicting modules but I decided to try and do a mock up and had a few ideas. We were told we could use our draft in our design and thankfully I had the draft on my pen drive. I first did a rough mock up of the magazine pages to play with ideas in my notebook and once I had them these were translated into the Indesign document. I had some difficulties as regards, the images as the pieces I wanted to use were either in books at home or work on my personal mac. I therefore improvised with Google images.

Johny then showed me some tips and tricks on Indesign specifically the page numbers. I felt I needed a refresher course in this matter to aid me in my marking the page numbers. The key lay in the Master pages as if clicked twice and altered the other pages would be affected a cause and effect scenario. One element that Johny showed me was the transparency effect on the numbers when enlarged and I could feel the creative cogs in my head turning and even showing me the grids again was a huge help. One thing I was reminded of was the hierarchy of the magazine pages title and images, the title was the first thing to consider enlarging and have an image come next. I played with fonts as a dummy test as I wanted my title to be a comic book like title.
Looking back on this session I would think that I learned a lot from starting a design for my article and I will continue to develop it over the next week. One thing from the session was clear is that from this point onwards it would be all hands on deck in all the modules and that I defiantly had some work to catch up on before the week was out, specifically Animation 102, Story Telling script to screen and Intro to the Making of. In hindsight I should've remembered the character design task but given that I had other module work to do it seemed to conflict with other work modules within the easter break.
In hindsight I should've remembered to try and do mock ups of my work over the easter break and get Johny's opinion on which one seems the most effective and which one needs improvement. In conclusion I would think that I have a steer into designing my magazine article pages and I shall start work on a refined version and work on elements to add to my pages. In future I shall list all my work to do over the week and the semester breaks and prioritise my work in order of importance, so that way I won't miss anything.
