Course Review: 31/12/17: Intro to creative play: @00491819 Alexander Montgomery

Over the course of the first semester I have found the Intro to creative play modules City project to be a rather enjoyable task indeed. When this course first started in September I was rather nervous as I didn't understand some of the things that we would be doing or what would be required of us. However as I listened to some of the activities that we would be doing on this course such as green screening and film noir I got rather excited as I would be practicing methods that animators us in live action or animated films. Upon hearing about the city project this seemed like it would be our first animation on the course, and when I heard about the working in teams aspect I was again slightly nervous as at the time I didn't know most of the people on the course but as we grew nearer to the time I established bonds of friendship with members of the group.

What I found most enjoyable was learning new things and even experiencing how animators work with elements like green screening, and how to piece it together, using Premier Pro or after effects. This actually came in useful as when doing the team work side of the module we could use elements used in other modules such as intro to the making of and the work of animation techniques we've learned in After Effects. I did have a few worries and concerns in the project after seeing the brief and the assignments given to us as I didn't know if I would get them ready in time for the given hand in date, and the software that I would need to download for my mac as I didn't want to lose file space for future uni projects. However over time I gained more confidence in realising the course as a whole was about getting out of our comfort zone and thinking outside the box.

One activity that I found most enjoyable was the foley sound activity whilst we didn't do anything practical it did show the facilities and equipment we may wish to use in our future activities in the course or our future projects. The session also showed how sound was mixed in movie scenes and the different types of sound in soundtracks and recordings. When the team working element of the module arrived and we were split into teams the two people I was with to start with Bethany and Jolanta seemed very kind and were open to ideas, as we discussed them and our roles in the team. When Kieran joined us we were gaining even more ideas to share however sometimes there were some doubts in the working ability of our group but I dismissed them with a simple reminder that we cannot so easily doubt one persons ability if we don't give them a chance, and that we must not be so quick to judge a book by its cover, people can surprise you in a way you don't expect.

In our group we had different tasks and assignment such as the scheduling and what we would be animating. We opened our ideas to look at the theme of interviewing inanimate objects which I thought was a good approach and even though on one day we were a person short Beth was able to conduct the research required in Piccadilly for the missing party so that she could start her work. I was thinking all the time we worked together was a bonding experience for us getting to know each other a bit more and knowing what we like and don't like. Even asking for others opinions on the matter of our work helped a lot to be it on a simple problem such as how we may consider the themes or advice on what we may consider doing for our animations and what style to do them in.

When I was doing the title sequence for our project I was glad that I remembered the 3D rostrum exercises from intro to the making of as it showed I was using an element used in another module and accompanied our city animations. We were even beginning to act like a well oiled machine by communicating on the facebook group chat that Bethany had set up for us in terms of showing ideas and knowing what to do for the days session.

Looking back on the day of handing in our animations for the Egg space pop up show I was feeling rather nervous about what others thought about our work and what the other groups had done for their responses but this was only natural as I'm sure that Walt Disney found it nervous when the studio was premiering their masterpieces to await the audiences reactions. I did feel the stress and pressure when producing my final animation at times as I wanted to get a good mark on my first project and couldn't afford to procrastinate or make mistakes in my work. I did get a little stressed with the work load of the other modules as I was still getting used to my new environment of Academic learning.

Overall when we showed our work I could see that the other students of the group and the course had considered what element to work in and the very quality of their work in the end products to show in this egg space. I personally think that the audience receiving it would see that we had worked hard in our animations and that they may've found them to be very enjoyable to watch. What this experience has taught me is that there will be times in the course that I feel the stress and pressure of the modules and time keeping in my projects, however this was all about learning to prepare us for any obstacles we meet in the projects to come.

Even though this was my first course module of the year that I had completed I was pleased with the work I had produced as this was the hardest thing that I've done and has helped me to consider what animation and part of the animation industry that I may wish to work in and learning these elements of after effects and premier pro has greatly helped me in the other modules of my course and could be of use in my own time at home.

In conclusion this module has had its ups and downs and its arguments but there is a light at the end of that dark tunnel and I believe that I have reached that light and am looking forward to the next chapter in this module and are willing to face any obstacle or challenge in my path. If I was to work in a team again I would possibly suggest that we see what our strengths and weaknesses are in animation and see which person would be best suited for a particular role.
