Animation Context: Week 7: Review of presentations and 360 degree presentation briefing:

In this weeks short session of Animation Context, we recalled events of previous lessons about presentation tips and skills, the idea was to slowly get our confidence going when doing the presentation and the presentation we did today with Annabeth was one of these surprise presentations. In University we would be getting lots and lots of presentations but Johnny informed us that the more presentations that we had we would get better and better at it, and we recalled the latin terms Horo Vacui the fear of empty space and the bottom line was not to fill a slide with too much empty space as it would be a bad element. We then went to the subject of magazines and how it is set out as a double page spread or D.P.S for short, most companies buy a page to have their article mentioned in a magazine. The point of this story was within any presentations that we do not need an empty space and to let the slides breathe which was the opposite of the fear of empty space called luxurious borders and magazine use this as they decided not to put anything in it as " it would cost a fortune.

The key thing was letting the slides breathe and not just over extend them. There were key things to remember from last week was the following

-Full bleed image as a slide in your presentation to talk about it
-A question e.g " are there more realities than we realise"
- 7+-2-5= 9 conscious memory slots

The memory slots was something to be mindful of as it was a matter of conscious and unconscious  understanding. Johnny said that we needed to think of our conscious thinking like an iceberg and below the surface 90% of the mind is unconscious whilst the rest are consciously thinking but the key was not to overload the audience as there is only so much that the mind can take before its overloaded. The point of the recap was to reinforce things and to give us some help into this weeks presentation challenge. The challenge was a 2 week research challenge where we would conduct deep research into a subject of our particular choosing within animation and present the information as a poster which sounded like a task that I could do.

We looked into an element called GIGO which Johnny informed us came from the world of computers and the base of it was if programmed  badly the computer would just crash, and that was where the research funnel would come in as in this we couldn't use things like google or wikipedia to research from as in this case it would be considered the trash food of the research funnel. Healthy information within the research funnel would be having a multitude of information to look at this included thinking outside the normal box of research such as using words of experts, or visual mood boards in certain subjects. When writing our work we use the words of experts and not say what we think otherwise it wouldn't work in the presentation. This is a method used by university to write their presentations or essays in their course.

The point of a presentation wasn't about writing an essay but to share knowledge within the group to create an informed opinion. In this task dubbed the 360 degree challenge, we had to choose an area of animation to research related to our chosen field that we favour in animation one of our own personal interest, and we could actually link it to the sciences and its helpful to choose a subject that relates to our personal interests that links to our personal interests if we link it to something that could potentially cause disaster in our careers.

In this presentation we had to include the following details.:

  1. 2 quotes from experts proving that its more than just your personal opinion: Harvard referencing.
  2. 3 or more eye catching images that relate to our subject e.g. concept art work from films and animations
  3. 2 magazine/ newspaper articles:Look at journal articles- find out what a journal is this is something that we need to interact with. EXTRA: Watch films or interviews relating to the work of the subject.
  4. 2 chapters in a library book- find  two specific books that are specific to our work and scan thats relevant - art of books count as well (but engage with written content books only! )Have certain pages of the chapter in the book that are specific to us.
  5. Several websites
Any journals that we look at would be associated with universities because they are an output and they contain elements that contain information that could be specific to our subject. When looking at research look at high quality materials to read whilst at the university which we could access through the library. In the Library search engine we needed to be specific as the one word would be very vague and not be easy to find. Johnny showed us a good starting point from an article which was a trailer for a film called Klaus which was Toon Booms signature work in the software and looking at the trailer despite the buffering the style of which seemed to resemble that of a story book given the colour and texture of the animation style much like that of the artist behind Disney's Tangled the series as the art style of this also had story book properties.

The end result would be combined into a poster in A3 scale which summarises all the research information to teach the viewer about the work with as many images as we want but the one challenge was it was to have a maximum of five words which seemed impossible, but "nothing is impossible" )Master Ogway Kung fu Panda). The research notes that we conducted could be stored in our blogs whilst some of it would go into our poster. There was no right or wrong answer to this task the tutors just wanted to see how we approach this particular task and the poster we may consider to be used as portfolio piece and if not it could be put up in the base room. We could use images or illustration of our own work and design, and if we needed any guidance on this matter we could ask the second years as they had done this task before, something that I would need to consider doing.

The presentation would be held on 20th November and next week would be the time we need to do our research task, which would help greatly. Reflecting back on this lesson I would say that this task that had been presented before us seemed like a creative task to perform and would test us on our research skills and a chance to use our skills in Photoshop. I already felt some ideas of the poster layout flooding through my head and would be the chance to put my books on animation at home to good use and may contain the knowledge that I need and perhaps research concept artists who styles that I follow and respect in the films they help do the work for. In conclusion I felt I could approach this task in the best way possible and that we could have the posters printed for us by Johnny within reason and the same went for other pieces of work for our studies.

I was looking forward to doing this task and this would be the paving stones for our magazine article that we needed to produce by the end of this module this would help us in developing ideas and research methods for the final outcome.
