Making of Integrated practice/creative collaboration: Course Summery: 11/1/19

Looking back on the modules Making of Integrated practice and Creative Collaboration, I would think that it has shown that making a documentary based animation is much more difficult that was first imagined. When these modules first began I was a little worried that they would conflict with each other in terms of the work load, however upon learning they were the same module I was feeling more relieved.

I was a little concerned when we were told it was a documentary based animation, as I wasn't sure what subjects to talk about. One other concerns was sorting ourselves into teams, whether I would find a team that could work well with for a high quality outcome. When I teamed up with Kieran and Stephen I was rather surprised that I would be working with Kieran again after the Creative Play module, however Stephen looked like a person who would help move the project along.

What I have enjoyed most on the modules was the After Effects workshops which have proven most useful to the project work and my own. It has helped gain further insight into after effects and the tracking methods proved useful in doing the animation. I especially found the linking layers function most helpful in terms of my motion comic work and could prove to be helpful to me.

I was hoping to work with something more interesting than bees, as they aren't that hard to animate.

We chose bees given how simple the subject was and its a subject worth discussing to a younger generation of students.

There have been a few challenges in this course in terms of team work, be it with Stephen or Kieran such as negotiating ideas or making sure all the storyboards, concept work and animation tryouts were completed by a certain date. However we did have meetings to check on our progress and we've used that time available to discuss and work on our animations. Stephens contribution of the 3D environments were very beneficial and I think I did a good job on doing the concept artwork and bee designs.

I was however relieved that I had remembered the Tracking element of after effects when doing some of the 3D environment footage that Stephen had created for the animation as doing it frame by frame would prove rather hard to do. This gave me a chance to use what I had learned in Performance and Character when doing the bee animation in terms of reference footage and animating the bee in Animate CC.

I did at times feel stressed at how some of our progress was slow and whether we would have our animation completed and submitted by the deadline of the 11th Jan. Especially when close to the hand in date I wasn’t sure if we could complete our work ready for the deadline given how slow Kieran was on his animation work.

Looking back I would say that though there were a few ups downs and disagreements we had produced good quality animation as a group and hope that it would receive good grades for the modules. In hindsight I felt perhaps I should’ve done more animation work than just the bee. However I was glad we got the chance to work with mixed media animation 3D and 2D animation together as one.

I’ve enjoyed the module and it has given me many challenges to rise to in the animation industry.

In future I believe we need to see who can do what work for the animation and who may want to work with other animations besides what was assigned. Also to look further into After Effects and other subjects to look at for documentary based animations.
