Making of Intergrated Practice; Week 11: 4/12/18: Animation fine tuning and back drops.

In week 11 of Making of integrated practice, our group continued work on our Bee Live animation project. I worked on fine tuning our bee animation in the opening scene, whilst Stephan worked on his two remaining 3D backgrounds for tracking and rendering. In fine tuning my work I did the bee's body and wings separately so that I could add the force motion blur effect to the footage. Per Stephan's recommendation I animated to about 2 seconds in the animation time line so that I could loop it in After Effects.

I felt rather concerned given this wouldn't be possible for the longer fly through footage. However I was confident with the opening shot. In the bee I remembered the feedback in having it curved as it swooped into the shot.

I decided to work on doing some animation for our logo. I felt it was time to pursue this as it would be a part of our opening sequence. I animated the logo by having the bee fly into the scene after the words appeared using the link feature between layers so they would not be separated. I felt pleased with the end result but wondered if I could improve on the wings in the animation and the movement of the body.

Stephan, Kieran and I went onto discuss the 3D backgrounds for our animation. In terms of the backyard Stephan explained the biggest challenge would be doing the sprinklers, as there was no water simulation in Maya. We decided to use simple cones to replicate water coming out. The challenge I felt was deciding the flight path and angles in the backgrounds as we had to account for the dog animation which Kieran would do.

We concluded the dog animation would need to do a curious act of following the bee under the hole only to bark instead of catch it. I could see Kieran wasn't too keen on the idea. However I could see the sense in this as it was looming close to the preview day next week so we had to make compromises.

I felt rather unsure when looking at the flight path and that the best way to decide was to animate the sprinklers spinning so I could get a better idea of what to do. This helped very well and the angle seemed to represent a roller coaster in Kieran's opinion. In terms of the road the camera would need to duck and dive into and under the cars going across. So Stephan and I decided on the angles and approaches. Stephan would divide the sequence into the different camera angles.

One angle would be a sky view of the gardens and have a rear end view for the cars.

Stephan, had recently done work on the forest which I thought looked very good. However he said it needed a backdrop for the remainder of the background. So whilst he and Kieran worked on the angles and path for the forest I worked on doing a backdrop for the forest. I did this using Photoshop and the simple shape like style used in our concept art. Originally this was A4 but Stephan said it needed to be 1920 x 1080. So I adjusted it accordingly. This and the black and white alphas were rendered and placed on the drive.

Looking back on todays session I would think the backgrounds and the animations for our project were starting to come together. However I sense perhaps we could've improved on some things. One being would be our communication about the other elements such as the people and the dog because it was clear Kieran wasn't satisfied with the idea. Another would be the time keeping in our group such as discussing where we were at in terms of work. We did discuss what animations we'd done but it wasn't clear if Kieran had started the dog or people animation as well as finishing the fish animation for the previs.

In hindsight I could've suggested I'd animate the human characters in the animation so Kieran could focus on other areas but in doing so wouldn't save time for other modules to work on.

In conclusion we had discussed and planed the angles for the next tracking animation and had fine tuned and animated our desired logo for our animation. I would work on tracking later in the week.

In future I shall make sure to voice my concerns more in the team and see how else we can be better ready for meeting deadlines.
