Performance and Character: Week 10: 26/11/18: Short story brief and brief review.

In week 10 of Performance and Character, it was rather surprising as this wasn't a review session of our current task but a briefing on our next exercise.

I was rather confused as I thought we had three weeks to complete our exercise before the review which was meant to be today. However Johny our tutor explained it was next week we would be doing the review with Joe. Which did seem a comforting relief as it gave me some time to refine my exercise. This week we were given a briefing about our next exercise, the short story. The idea being we would use what we'd learned from the exercises in a short story for submission.

Johny then reminded us that in Animation 103 (this module) that it was a culmination of what we'd learned in the past modules of the course such as the ball bounces, character walks and the dialogue exercise. We were then shown some examples of what students had done in their show reels. I noticed in one of the examples it showed some use of the 11 second club dialogue exercise in the last shot. This made me wonder if we were allowed to use this in the short story. An idea of the animation began to form in my mind.

Johny advised we keep the story short and sweet and not to turn it into a full length movie, this was about the quality of the animation not the length it played for.

We also took a look at the important elements in visual development. I was rather curious by this and felt it was of importance to learn. One of the most important elements was the pacing of the animation followed by the audio and the visual quality of the final piece.

In producing our animation we needed to consider if it was going to be dynamic as we were advised to steer away from side on views and look more at camera angles. One example of dynamic animation we were shown was a parkour style Maya animation which to my perspective looked like a scene from a mission impossible movie.

Later in the lesson James showed us how in Maya we could pair the camera in the animation space to the character or area of the set using an element named the aim camera. This seemed like something my group was approaching for our group animation project and I could see that Stephan was paying attention though he has used it before. The animation James showed us with this method was rather funny as it showed a rubber duck being kicked over.

Looking back on this lesson whilst it started with a little confusion I was beginning to see what Johny had in mind for us to do for our short story assignment. By doing so has given me an idea of a story to produce which would be a comedic basket ball player. However I did have some concerns about the time we would have to produce this, given how I thought we would be showing our work today not next week. I would need to confirm with Johny about how long we would have on this task until week 12 of our course which was near the submission date.

In hindsight I should've shown Johny my dialogue exercise to get an opinion on what else to do with it before next week. I may consider starting my short story early so that I can receive feedback next week.

In conclusion  I now have an idea about the short story and will start to produce it over the next two weeks. In future I shall ask for further details on the assignment in terms of the use of existing or 11 second club dialogue.
