Making of intergrated practice: Week 7: 6/11/18: Production bible briefing:

In week 7 of Making of integrated practice we discussed the matter of our production bibles in our group projects.

The principle I thought would be similar to what we had during last years Story Telling script to screen module, however there were some differences. Annabeth, our tutor explained that in some aspects of the module it would be edging us closer to what the level 6 students would do for their production bible. One of which was in the production section of the bible which would show visual tests if say we were approaching a 3D project. I felt rather intrigued as I thought it looked like something we would show in our BeeLive project.

Other new elements included some behind the scenes photos that we may wish to include for an animated slide show for our making of video.

One element of particular interest to me was how we would market our film. Annabeth explained this could potentially be through designing posters, app games, soft toys or even cushions. Looking at this I felt this was a good idea and I did know somethings about posters and cushion printing. I even knew a friend from college who could potentially be of help to us in doing a Bee plush puppet.

Festival distribution seemed like a big topic for us as it was the opportunity to build a portfolio and show our work to potential clients. In our groups case we would approach people like green peace for example as our work was focused on bees so perhaps bee related charities would find this of good use.

For a majority of the production bible it would need to consist of elements we've used before such as turn around sheets, colour ways, background art, style frames, character designs, floor plans, rig diagrams (2D animation) along with log lines and a synopsis. I felt this would be a big step up from the previous module on script to screen, and was a little concerned about our current time frame.

However this was why we were having this session, so that we could begin to put a production bible together and hopefully by week 9 of the module we would have a growing production bible.

Over the session my group discussed some ideas on how we should layout our production bible and cover design idea. Stephan suggested we should look at other examples and fortunately Annabeth had brought in examples of production bibles and art of movie books to help us in our layout ideas. I felt throughout this we were hitting some disagreements about how the text or layout of the cover page. Possibly because I was having trouble grasping what Stephan was asking me about the design as I was trying to consider the layout as I would be doing the bible in InDesign.

We were starting to come up with some ideas involving the use of one of our style frames as the cover. One thing I noticed and pointed out to the group was that one of the production bibles shown to us didn't have a title or a synopsis so the reader wouldn't know what to expect in contents.

I had suggested perhaps the use of a honey comb pattern in the pages of the bible as I liked how the student who did the cold front bible used painting backgrounds like a cold dark winter as the background to link to the finished product. Stephan shot down that idea immediately as he felt it was getting too bee related and not all production bibles had coloured backgrounds. I did agree with him on this matter as one of the examples had simple white pages with the artwork on show.

I suggested the best way to help us decide would be to work on a mood board of ideas for the cover and layout which would be something I would approach at a later date.

Looking back at the session I could see that the production bible would be different this time and would need time to consider. I could see why Annabeth was showing us this and wanting us to do something similar to level 6 students work. I felt this make sense as we would be thinking outside the box in this module. I also believe this would help in developing my ideas on production bibles for my own work. In hindsight I could've started to build up a mood board of ideas in this session to help us in terms of design and layout so that we would be further down the line in our work.

In conclusion this session was most helpful in briefing us on our production bibles and it did give us a better idea of what to include in this stage of the projects. I hope that we will be able to keep up with the work load and be ready for submission.

In future I shall work on doing mood boards in preparation for design based exercises.
