Making of Intergrated Practice: week 10: 30/11/18: Feedback and developments.

In Week 11 of making of integrated practice, our group reviewed the previs piece that I edited with the 2D bee  yesterday and reviewed our progress in our animation pipeline.

We liked the overall look of the previs but there were some elements that needed to be improved. One of which Stephan suggested was the angle of the bees tail when it swoops into the opening shot, being at a straight angle rather than bobbing up and down. This did make sense to me and I felt rather embarrassed that I didn't account for this in the animation. Another area of improvement was one Annabeth suggested on the bees wings. She suggested I looked at an animation called smearing, which entailed incorporating a small blur effect in the wings to show the speed it was moving at. She showed me some examples and I felt I could understand what was being asked of me.

We reviewed our progress in the animation and  Stephan showed us what he'd been able to do with the houses, backyards and road which were very impressive and said the park would only need rendering and texturing so that we can move onto a final animation. One thing we discussed was the fair ground, given we were rather close to our December preview date we all agreed to put the fairground scene aside for now and just have the bee fly into the woodlands area. This made sense to me given how Stephan didn't have enough information about the fair ground to work from and it would save time before our preview and the need for mirror based animations.

Kierans side of the project focused on the people, bird, and fishes. However when he told us his time to work on them was a week that to myself and Stephan seemed impossible and unacceptable. However Kieran had started on doing the fish animations in Photoshop and so we uploaded the top down shot I'd done using the tracking in After Effects into the drive so he could then apply his fish.

First appearances showed his fish needed more frames as it just seemed to be a movement from one key frame to another rather than have in-betweens and extreme frames. In my opinion I believe that Kieran had done a good job on the tail movements but just needed to work on his framing.

In conclusion we were making progress in our animation project despite the compromises. In hindsight I should've considered what information Stephan had on the fair ground so I could've done designs for rides in the concept art. However in animation we must make sacrifices. I could've suggested that I should do the animation for some of the human characters while Kieran worked on the other animals given what I've learned from 103 classes.

In future I shall make sure to put forward these suggestions and work on doing animation of bees that also move to different angles when flying.
