Creative Collaboration: Week 7: 7/11/18 -8/11/18: Background concept work.

Over the past two days of my free sessions I worked on doing more concept artwork for Creative Collaboration. I worked on some key locations in our animation, the backyards, woodlands and fair grounds.

Given Stephan's recent feedback and opinions on my artwork style, and how I may want to consider
looking at the digital painting concept artists use I decided to look at others work and look at tutorials for certain elements. I looked at the concept art magazines top gain inspiration from other artists such as the art of Kung Fu Panda 3, this gave me some ideas on what brushes to use for different elements. However looking back on my past work using Clip Studio Paint Pro (what I use) I wasn't sure whether I should try to use Photoshop. The only thing was Clip studio has more artistic tools for my desired work and gives better results so I decided to see if I could utilise it better.

When doing some of the work on the backyards and woodlands I looked at the different brushes in Clip Studio. I would normally work with brushes like a flat oil brush or soft brush, but I didn't consider the use of pencil or chalk based brush tools. I tried these brushes on a test sheet and it
seemed they gave off specific textures for elements like rocks or foliage.

I felt rather surprised as I hadn't considered this for use in my work. This was most useful when I was working on brick and grass elements in the DIY backyard for the animation. Stephan suggested I should improve on my bricks and grass in my digital work so I looked up tutorials for that element particularly how to capture texture and realistic influence.

The tutorials I felt were very helpful, and learning from past experience seeing tutorials on the internet helped me to develop my skills in digital painting/art. For how concept artists paint I looked at the following tutorial video.

Though fast paced I felt I could capture certain elements such as how the artist sketches in certain elements and shapes in grey scale before applying the colours. Using this knowledge I applied it to my woodland piece and with my reference photo and tutorial for wood texture I painted the scene. Looking at the finished piece I would think my use of the chalk brushes and paint brushes helped very well in elements like the leaves and tree tops. I felt this looked like something that a concept artist would create and was rather proud of it, I was beginning to see what it was Stephan was trying to tell me and recommend how to approach it.

Version 3

Whilst I was developing my digital painting skills I felt the detailed art was taking too much time to develop and I had to have some of the main backgrounds done by Friday. So I decided to work with simple shapes and flat colours much like the style frame I produced a week ago, and it would show a 3D influence.

This method I felt seemed to help with elements such as the brick and fence patterns. I worked with simple shapes first in greyscale then applied colours by locking the pixels on the layers.
In doing my work I posted each piece on the group chat to receive feedback and opinions from Stephan and what elements to remove or improve upon. In some cases it was the positions of the deck chairs in the sunbathers garden or to change the appearance of the burrow in the dog owners backyard and in some of the more detailed pieces removing a coloured sheet as it seemed to distract too much from the background. This though was done from an experience as my mothers former partner once made a water feature in the back garden and used a sheet to cover it and I felt that related to DIY.

In doing the family back garden, I had some issues with the perspective view on the shapes and these needed to be corrected which was easy enough to do. I even included a tree house and Stephan agreed it would add more to the family backyard dynamic.

Looking back on my digital artwork I would think I have become more confident drawing/painting straight into the computer rather than rely on a sketched image as a guide. I believe the artwork is relating more to what a concept artist would produce and can now understand the feedback that Stephan was giving me about looking at other methods of digital painting. However, I feel I could improve on some areas such as the way I did the door frames in the more detailed paintings and the highlights on the more metal elements of the DIY garden tools.

This experience has made me consider the use of other brushes in Clip Studio other than the ones I currently use in my work, as different brushes are good for different things.

In conclusion I have learned a lot from the feedback given to me by my fellow teammates and has helped me develop my understanding of digital painting in order to produce concept art for the project.

In future, when I do concept art I shall consider the use of other brushes and tutorials to help me with the more complex details in the drawing.
