Creative collaboration: Week 7: 6/11/18: Team meeting and review:

In our team meeting after discussing the production bible situation, our Beelive group discussed and reviewed our tasks for this week. I had recently produced concept artwork for the park scene in our animation. In my feedback Stephan had some concerns about my style of painting and the use of a goal post around a goal net, which I misinterpreted when he showed me a reference image for the design process.

On the matter of the rest of the group Kieran had yet to finish the thumbnail work for our story board even though we explained they were due for today. I was beginning to feel like we were falling behind again on our work and Stephan agreed as he was taking too long on these thumbnail sketches which would compromise our time table for our work. We then set to work on doing research on what kind of animal obstacles we wanted for our animation. In terms of the bird we knew it needed to be a bird that's a bees natural predator and using Google we discovered a Mocking bird and a thrush.

Spiders I felt was a difficult subject for most of us as it was hard to tell which looked good for our animation, but we soon decided on a spider for our animation and it was a common garden spider as it catches bees and can spin webs which were elements needed in our script.

Stephan wanted our chosen dog for the project, to be rather big so we looked at potential candidates in a German shepherd or a Great Dain type dog. I felt this was helping to get a better grasp of what sort of species we wanted to work with and some of the birds we looked at seemed rather aerodynamic which fitted with our roller coaster theme and our inspiration of extreme flying. It was decided that Kieran would animate the dog, bird, spider and more human based characters. However I did have some concerns about this decision for time reasons given how long he took on the thumbnails. At the same time however It did give me less animation work to do as I was worried I would need to animate more characters at one time in a scene.

In terms of my painting work Stephan suggested I look at the work of others for style ideas. However I was trying to find my own style of art in animation instead of copying from others. Stephan though reminded me that as artist students we look at the work of others to help guide our own development. I realised I should've remembered this as I looked at the work of other artists back in college to give me design inspiration. Plus when I look at art websites there are styles that I wish to pursue for my own development such as lineless art or background painting.

I decided to consult pinterest and at the same time sketch up ideas for our backgrounds. In the beginning of this project the idea of keeping things simple was a constant factor so Stephan and I looked at ways we may want to render the background work and Kieran seemed to agree with the simple shapes and shading of this 3D background

I could see the appeal of this as an artist as it looked much like the style we wanted to approach. Having sketched an idea for one of the backyards Stephan suggested as an opinion to look at a different angle as I was too focused on perspective so I looked on Pinterest for inspiration and found a background image using a perspective I decided to approach.

What I liked about this piece was the fact it was very neat and impressive which was an angle that Stephan suggested I approached for this backyard and the perspective seemed to work very well with what I wanted to achieve.

Looking back on this meeting I was beginning to see that in this project and in my own work I needed to work outside my normal comfort zone in terms of painting style and what inspiration to seek. I feel that Stephan is suggesting elements that concern me in general and perhaps to help me improve on my current art style into something more worthy of concept artists work.  This would be the time to look at the artwork styles that I have been meaning to try for experimentation and development.

I do hope that Kieran will be able to work faster on the thumbnails and the concepts as come Friday we would be moving into the production phase of the project. I don't doubt any team members characteristics or talents I do encourage them to follow their potential but we need to keep in mind one key element.Time management.

In conclusion I understand the feedback and advice that I have received and will use it to further develop my work and art style in the near future of the project. In future I shall look at different concept artists and their art styles to get inspiration and better ideas for painting a concept art scene.
