Performance and Character week 6: 31/10/18: Bad limp maya revisit

On my week 6 self study session I revisited my Maya animation of a bad limp. Taking James's advice on Monday I needed to revisit the idea of placing holds into the animation and so I opened my current version of the file and saved it as a new project to make the necessary adjustments. I first tried to key select the translate Z frame while the left foot was down on the ground however despite this the animation refused to keep the foot in place. I therefore took out the key frames after the walk started and tried again. I tried to make the holds using the graph editor but despite this the hold wouldn't
keep. I was getting frustrated with this, given Maya animation was a very difficult element in my area of animation.

I took a look at an article on making foot holds in Maya and I learned that by keeping the auto key frame feature on for moving certain areas and translating the key frame before hand did indeed create the hold needed for the feet plants. I tried this in the animation and it seemed to work. However as I progressed, the animation was beginning to show problems such as the right leg extending too fast or the waist moving at the wrong time and it got me feeling anxious that I would have to start again.

I therefore decided to shorten the walk path to the four more perfect steps in t
he limp rather than jeopardise the animation and cause further agitation in the process.

Looking at the final result I was pleased that I had improved on the foot placements, and took into account James's advice. However I would think there maybe still some areas of improvement to perform on the leg speed and the movement in the waist. I am beginning to consider to do a more 2D version of this exercise. At the same time however the brief requires the use of 2D, Stopmotion and 3D animation so I felt that I couldn't go against the brief despite my grievances with Maya.

In conclusion I am rather pleased with the desired outcome and hope the feedback I receive will help me to develop my understanding of 3D animation. In future I shall consult my tutor on the new versions of the exercises I do and ask about the 3D element of the brief whether or not I can use animation methods that play to my strengths.
