This week I decided to work on my new approach to the playful child exercise, given recent information that it was about a child having fun rather than a baby learning to walk. I used the same medium of 2D as before as it would give me chance to play around with it more. I rewrote my story having a young child play in a park after a rain storm died down and is enjoying every moment playing in the puddles. I looked at reference footage for this particular animation as I realised that I was working with water as well.
To aid me in doing a perspective animation, I created a small 2 point perspective guide, I felt this had started out being a means of getting the puddle in the background in perspective, but I realised that it could help in the scaling of the character as he/she moves forwards. I felt that referencing the Survival kit book helped a lot in terms of mapping out the walk movements in the legs. Learning from Adam's 2d workshop the duplicating the walk/running layers helped considerably and saved time in production.
Since I was working from child walks it proved rather difficult than the baby walk animation as it
was hard to capture the arm and leg movements from the reference footage. Never the less, I persisted, and remembered the run and jump animations from the first year. The positioning showed the figure close to the ground and remembering this I communicated the leg movements into the gap in-between the jumps. Learning from the climb animation I angled the body of the figure when doing the touch down/landing and this helped map out the leg and arm positions.
I felt looking at the animation I could've improved on the arm movements and positioning as it didn't seem to show much movement in the run/walk. The puddle animation I felt was rather simple as it was circular lines when showing the ripple effect from the impact of the feet on the water, I used this same element when the character ran away leaving foot prints in the water. Simple scribble lines were used to replicate the splash in the water. These were done on separate layers.
Without guide.
Looking back on the animation I believe that I've done a good use of perspective animation. However I could see there were still some areas to improve upon, such as the arm movements in the run/walk and needed to take a closer look at my reference footage. One other thing would be how my walk went as it seemed to show a little skip in the run and clearly I needed to pay closer attention to the poses when spreading them out and scaling them up to show the figure growing in size. I may need further feedback on this from my tutor to see how else I could improve upon this further.
In conclusion I feel I've done good work on this animation but may look into improving upon it before the submission and review of the exercise.
In future I shall take a closer look at my posing and arm movements of my chosen subject.
Child playing Animation:
Name: Callum Lewis
Parents: Joseph Lewis
Story: On a rather grim mid autumn day rain poured through Lymm Village all through the night, and in the morning dawn there are massive puddles around the ground. Joseph Lewis decides to take his young 7 year old son Callum to the park to spend time together as a family. Callum
excitedly sees some puddles around the park and decides to jump in them taking a running start then after splashing in the puddle decides to act like he’s flying a plane in the sky playing his favourite game.
