Given the time I took yesterday on my Maya limp walk I came in the following day to do some work on my rejected lover walk for stop motion. I first recorded reference footage for my rejected lover communicated them into bar sheets and storyboards and began my story.
The baseline of my story was a young man who had fallen in love for his high school crush decided to ask her out on a date this evening. He carried a rose and when he arrives at her house he's shocked to find she already has a boyfriend as they kiss on the steps of her house. The poor boys heart is crushed and so walks away in rejection.
In doing the stop motion I learned from last year that using the rig on the armature whilst doing the walk would help with foot placements and the walk itself. However when using the armature I discovered one of the hands was very loose so I used Plastercine to try and strengthen it, as it seemed someone who used it previously had the same idea. Originally the character would throw away a rose for rejection, however I found in the stopmo room a heart shaped chocolate piece still wrapped in red foil.
I felt it would be a creative use of materials so I decided to use it. I felt that using the rig on the armature helped improve the walk cycle tremendously and I was amazed that I was starting to improve from last years work. However the camera base was a little loose and by accidentally knocking it halfway through the animation it threw it out of focus, this was soon corrected and I finished the animation.
I decided to try and remove the rigs in the animation, however, I felt that I was still unfamiliar with the new software and couldn't do it. However I discovered the rig removal tool in the tool bar and implemented it on the frames using the blank end frame as a template. I learned that the process was very long much like last year and may possibly consider not doing this if I'm close to a deadline.
Looking back on the animation exercise I feel that I have done an exceptional job in executing the walk and used a creative use of exaggerating elements such as the depressive breathing as he throws away the box of chocolates as a way of throwing away his heart. I felt this added more to the theme of rejection. I think however, I could improve on the use of the rig in the animation as a first year student pointed out it appeared the armature was dragging the rig along. In hindsight I should've tried to have the rig in a position where it wouldn't move and the armature would walk along without dragging.
The overall walk performance seemed very good as it was both real and exaggerated at the same time in terms of the leaning over in depression and hands in pockets as he walked along.
In conclusion I feel I have done a good job on this exercise and hope that the feedback may help me to improve upon my work. In future I shall look into trying to do a walk with the rig holding still instead of dragging along the stage.
