In week 5's session of Performance and Character, we took a close look at different styles of acting and had a briefing on the character walk exercises.
We began, looking at the different styles of acting in animation from a page of the acting and performance for animation book written by Derek Hayes. Johny our tutor informed us that there were three styles of acting in animation.
Simulation- Creating something that looks real from observation
-Representation- Creating animation that can't be done through observation (Dinosaurs)
-Interpretation- Unbridled more imaginative version of animation for creative uses.
I felt most of these styles made sense and recognised that the representation style was used in such things as Walking with Dinosaurs when Dinosaurs were created in CGI without any ideas of what they would really look like such as in terms of colour and how they had to look at elephant walks for the movement of the sorapod Diplodicous.
Johny showed us an example of simulation in Maya and I learned that there were different types of simulations to be used such as water and even nebular. This made me wonder if this could be of use in our group project. However we learned that this could burn out our computers if we worked with more complicated simulations. However at the same time we learned that simulations could also help with ball bounces which made me wonder why this wasn't brought to our attention in first year.
We were then shown different types of acting through stopmotion clips and even some 2D animation that we could look at in our own time. I was rather taken in my the reward animation as it exaggerated the perception in some scenes and exaggerated some of the poses. We then learned about some of the different performances.
Cartoon- Over the top exaggeration acting.
Theatrical- over the top acting but allows the audience to read the performance better.
Naturalistic performance- More natural realistic performance from the actor.
Johny then briefed us on the walking exercises and this gave me a better idea of what to work with over the next week. We were to do three different walks.
A person with a bad limp
A young child full of the joys of life
A thoughtful/rejected lover
It didn't matter what the childs age was but we were shown an example and it seemed to show the maya rig skipping. This development made me think about the child animation that I had already done for my response. We were advised to consider in 2D perhaps to have the character walking towards the camera I feel this could be a rather challenging aspect but may take this into consideration.
Looking back over the session I began to get a better idea of the animation exercises and know how to approach them for the next review week. I could see the idea of the acting styles as it would help us to consider what to use in the acting and performance. I may look into this further for my work. I feel I could've asked some more questions about the rejected lover exercise and get more details into doing it in Maya.
However in conclusion I feel the introduction of the acting styles will help me considerably in my animations overall performance and acting style. I will also revisit my first attempts and reimagine the story behind it. In future I must try and get the full details of the exercise before doing a first attempt but trying to interpret what was given to us in the review would help give me guidance in refining my work.
