Week 4's session of the Performance and Character module was a review of our climbing animation exercises that we had been working on over the past few weeks. I was feeling a little nervous about today as I wasn't sure how the feedback would be. Our review was done in the order of the register we had this morning. Looking at most of the animations I would think the ones I was most impressed by was Georgias, Adams and Beths. This was because I could see that Adam being the most experienced of the group used camera movements in his animation and made it look like an action scene. This was something I hoped would be covered in his 2D workshops.
For Beths animation I could see she had the same idea as me doing a layered background piece in her exercise. Though her sneaking character animation and inbetween frames needed some work I could tell she had thought a lot about the climbing movements when scaling the fence. For Georgia who worked with Maya I could see that the character rigs climbing and landing seemed rather detailed and realistic but the ball seemed a bit miss leading. This would be because the ball appeared to be a heavy steel ball when in actual fact it was a football.
Other animations seemed rather comedic, such as Paige's fat child climbing over a fence to get his foot ball. What I liked was how much attention she paid to her characters performance and the reference footage she used. One improvement I could consider would be the leg and arm movements in the characters running.
When it came time for me to show my work there was a problem, I had uploaded the wrong version of my exercise to my YouTube account. My final version was a layered piece which had the character behind the fence and with a smoke screen finish but the one I had uploaded was the run and climb without the layered effect. I was concerned and anxious I wasn't sure what to do. However I realised the module was looking at the performance of the character not the way we layered our backgrounds and so everyone understood.
Stephan one of the students of the group suggested I looked at the hand movements as the character grabbed the top of the fence to climb up, whilst Paige suggested changing the colours of the background and not use complementary colours which I could understand given I used a night time setting. Joe and James the tutors suggested that I looked at the characters positioning and arm movements when it was throwing the smoke bomb. I was sure I gave the character a more exagurated throw when producing the animation but looking back I felt I should've added more power in the throw. However, this was because I was under the impression that this was ten seconds long whilst others work was longer than that.
I feel I may need more detail on the length of the animation.
Looking back I would think that the feedback has given me much to think about in terms of the characters throw strength and positioning in the poses. I was a little disappointed that I used the preproduction version but this was a lesson to double check my work before uploading it. I would think that I had learned a lot from other students work and seen what they've been able to achieve with their decided media. Our next exercise was the character walk cycles, which I feel could be a challenge as they were different walks to use.
However I feel I can achieve three walk animations and I am considering using three different mediums 2D,Stopmo and 3D.
In conclusion I feel this lesson had been rather informative and helpful in my animation development, and hope that I find success in the exercises to come. In future I shall place my finished work on the Facebook group to show them ahead of time and perhaps get some feedback to refine upon for the review week, and be sure to double check my work before the week review.
