In week 3's free session of the course I set to work on creating a third attempt at the climb exercise. With recent feedback from my tutor Johny, I knew the areas that needed improvement was the landing and fall of the character, as well as, the smoke bomb toss. Having looked at reference footage of a smoke bomb and how its a cylinder rather than a sphere I decided to see how I could replicate a rolling can in the animation.
I had a file copy of the animation before the fall so I wouldn't need to do it from scratch as the run was approved in terms of performance. However I also remembered something James the technician told me about showing the pull when the character climbed the fence. Having learned some elements of framing extension from Adams 2D workshops I extended the frame and added some in-betweens to show the character pulling on the fence when he lands on it after the run and jump. I learned this was an element I needed to repeat when I did the landing.
Having learned the estimated height of the fall I knew the character would need to land on the ground with force so when the character landed I added a bouncing ball effect in the body just as it landed on the ground. The land pose had to be close to the ground and the pose I drew which was a kneeling pose quite low to the ground seemed to communicate that well in my opinion but I will let some feedback from the tutors see how it worked.
I feel that some areas were rather difficult such as animating the smoke bomb to move with the character as I did it on the layer above so it was difficult to do the cylinder in a closed hand. However I was able to manage it and showing the closed hand on the character was by doing a triangular shaped hand with white grey lines to show fingers.
Looking back on the reference footage I knew a smoke bomb let off some small streams of smoke after the pin was pulled so I communicated that through the animation when the bomb was tossed. In looking at the second attempt I felt there was less performance in the throw, so I added some movements in the body and hips when he executes the toss. This I felt was something that would be brought up in the feedback session.
When the animation was finished I felt confident that this was an improvement over the first two attempts and how well I've exaggerated the poses and landing of the character. However one element that I think I need to improve upon would be the way I showed the can being thrown over the fence as I felt it didn't show much movement when being tossed, and perhaps show a leg being raised to exaggerate the power needed in the throw.
Otherwise though I was pleased with my efforts in this third attempt and it has helped me understand more of 2D animation and putting what I've learned in the 2D workshops to practical use. I would think what I've learned from this is to look at how to better exaggerate a characters actions in doing a performance. In future I shall consider exaggerating the poses in the exercises we have in the future.
