Performance and Character (Animation 103) Week 2: 1/10/18: Review of last week, Rigs and animation prep.

In week 2 of Performance and character we had a quick recap of last weeks session and assigned exercises. However due to working on the animation for this module I didn't have time to perform the servant and king exercise. However we performed it this morning which was a relief. When doing the performance as the servant, I felt that a servant would bow and greet his king (Munty) as he passed. I felt I did a rather good performance as the servant. However in the feedback the group felt that a servant wouldn't greet his king as he passed by as he was the more statue figure of society not to mingle with the lower class. I did see the sense in the feedback and would take that into account for future exercises.

What I learned this week was regarding the use of new rigs for maya that seemed more practical to use than Buckid and delivered a more realistic performance. One of these rigs was named Boney. What we learned was a function called stretched allowed the figure to be stretched much like an elastic band quite literally and possessed similar controls to Buckid so we could put what we learned from him to use on this rig.

I therefore downloaded this rig to practice with as recommended by James the technician. Later in the session I played around with the rig in a practice animation and it made me consider the possibility of using 3D again in some of the exercises.

Last week we were told to read an article called Squiggle, which talked about acting in an animation and upon reading it last night I learned a few things from it more specifically the importance of reference footage and a helpful tip of using a stopwatch in Barsheets to better time movements. The group each learned a few things also such as acting like the character in the animation such as eating like them or even acting in the scene itself, this I felt was a reference to a behind the scenes video of Alvin and the Chipmunks 3.

The main focus though was on our preproduction planning of our climbing exercise, and to help us get a better understanding we were shown some examples of past students work, and could get some guidance. I learned a lot from these examples and felt if I could improve upon my first attempt of the exercise in 2D. One element I learned was the use of the ball bounces from 101 and how they needed to be shown in the human body particularly in the running and landing sections of the animation.

I felt I needed a second opinion on my plans and first animation attempts so I showed Johny my work. He seemed impressed with my first attempt and suggested focusing on the ball bounces idea for the character. This I agreed with as I was intending to refine my work ready for next week and I felt this lesson gave more detail as to what movements were needed in the animation and what to consider. I could see the sense in doing the production planning one week and the animation the next but I feel its a good idea to prototype as Johny suggested so that when I get better details I can refine my work.

Over the course of today I would think the positive would be getting the feedback of my pre productions and my animations to get a better idea of how to approach the exercise and more in depth details. One thing I could improve on was have someone record the king and servant exercise on my phone so I could have something to annotate and add to my blog posts I may remember this for future exercises. The articles I felt did provide good advice for certain things and reading them could prove beneficial for guidance or inspiration so I shall look closely at any new articles that appear on blackboard.

I intend to look at the possibility of using these 3D rigs in my future exercises and experiment with them further to get a basic idea of how they work and how beneficial they could be. I possibly would've looked at doing a practice walk with the rig to see how it performs in comparison to Buckid.

In future if an exercise such as the king and servant should arise again I shall be sure to perform it straight away rather than forget it later. I shall also consider waiting to get full details of the exercise before performing the animation itself.
