Creative Collaboration: Week 5: 26/10/18: Discussion and ideas for making of and influences.

Week 5's session of creative collaboration was one where we could start working and discussing ideas for our work. Recently our Bee-live group had recently agreed on a final design for our bee character, as well as, the logo for our animation.

Final logo design

Final bee designs
In my designs we had decided to use the lineless bee design as I could animate it and I had considered the time it would take to draw the outlines of the bee when doing the animation itself. I felt I could work better with lineless art based animation as it used shapes and shading and could help in our 3D background based rollercoaster Animation.

We went on to discuss the final script draft of our project. I felt relieved that the script had finally been finished as I wasn't sure if we were making much progress but due to discussing it on Tuesday we were able to move forward and Kieran and Stephan were able to finish it. I liked the idea of a fun house in a fun fair as it presented the possibility of working with mirrors and distorting the bee's reflection.

Plus I could see the scene visualising in my mind and could prove an interesting angle to approach. We decided last night to use Pinterest as a research board for our designs, concept work and storyboards and since I was familiar with Pinterest it made sense to use. In reviewing the script Stephan suggested we had a football try to hit the bee but it misses and I wondered if it would be a good idea to introduce a slow-motion shot of the bee just passing the ball, much like how in DreamWorks Turbo, the snail jumped through a race cars tyre in slow-motion acting as some dramatic pause.

Stephan decided to consider this as he was team leader. We moved onto discussing how we would do the making of and we looked at the possibilities of doing interviews of the crew of the animation and maybe video recordings/screenshots of our work in preproduction, production and post production.

Annabeth our tutor, talked to us and suggested the use of animating our logo design for the animation. In hindsight I was planning to do some after effects animation with the logo when I found the time between my module work. She then brought our attention to an element called pre-visualisation. We looked at an example and to me this looked like a 3D version of a storyboard animatic but it was an interesting element to consider and since Stephan is an expert in Maya animation he thought it be a good idea to approach this instead of an animatic.

I felt rather unsure, but I could see the sense as looking at the examples it would help us in terms of a flight pattern for the bee and could look better than a 2D animatic and seems more appropriate.

Our team assignment was divided, Kieran was to work on thumbnail storyboards based on the script, I would be working on turnaround sheets and background art so we could begin building and visualising a 3D environment for our work.

Stephan advised I should take reference photos of the main locations we had decided on; Park/football pitch, house backyards, fun fair, fun house and woodlands. He also suggested I should look into what kind of 2D animation to use for the bee as it could help with the lineless style I wish to approach. This made sense to me so over the next week I would look into this matter further.

Looking back on the session  I thought we were starting to make progress now that the script was finally finished and we could move forward into artwork and pre visual material. I did have some concerns about the 3D pre visualisation idea and the time it would take in terms of our project timeframe, so I feel I need to work round the clock on my artwork so we can move further forward in the project. In conclusion I believe we are moving forwards and that we are working to the best of our abilities in the project.

In future I shall look into different elements of 2D animation to see what would best affect the lineless animation style and how it would work and benefit it.
