Animation year 2: Semester 1: 24/9/18: Performance and Character (Animation 103) Week 1: Introduction:
The second year of our Animation course had begun and this was the year where our grades mattered to our degree's future. Our first lesson was Performance and character, the equivalent of Animation 103.
The purpose of this module we were told by our tutors focused primarily on the emotion and actions of the character in our animations, and using the principles we learned in Animation 101-102 we would be applying some emotion to them in terms of performance. I felt that this was where the acting principle of the course would come into play, and it was a good chance to do some acting.
However for our animation exercises this time the process would be different. Johny, our tutor informed us that instead of just mapping out bar sheets and story boards we would be producing a biography of our character such as if they're male, female, their age and how they may perform in the exercises. This to me felt like the next step from what we did last year. One element that I learned of particular interest was taking notes of a performance of a character in a film, this to me sounded like an excellent way of building our characters own personalities and see how we could learn from other media.
In terms of media we were by Joe, the support tutor that we could use 2D,3D and stopmotion but we were advised to consider having Maya based animations in some of the exercises. I felt this seemed reasonable as 3D animation wouldn't help in some of the exercises. Our first exercise focused on climbing and we learned it entailed different actions run, jump, climb and throw. This to me sounded best for stopmotion and 2D animation.
What was learned today was how the module would operate, as well as, the hand in date which was December 14th, which meant leaving exercises to the last minute wasn't an option in this module. We were also informed that we would be monitored for the possibility of being recommended for work placement or work experience.
Looking back what was good about the session was getting us back into the swing of the course and an idea of how this year would be laid out. This helped me get an understanding of what to expect and how our blogs would be laid out. However, I'm still unsure about the blogs since we were told it would be condensed this year which was an issue. I could understand the limit of 6 blog posts reflecting on what we learned and how it would help, I would just need time to get used to the system. Our assignment was to plan out our exercise as we would be animating next week or even animate this week if we can.
I could see the sense in creating a biography for our characters in the exercises as it would help in looking for reference footage or in recording it. I shall look into some of the core books and see what help they may provide. One thing I picked up on was our personal studies in our own time in a sense, using what we'd learned or to try new things we could apply to the module.
What I could've done was consult with my tutors on further details such as what elements were needed in the blogs such as the process of creating the exercises or what to include in the learning journal.
In future I shall get a second opinion regarding the blogs as I hope to improve from last year's. Given however, that we're just getting back into the course this is to be expected but I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
