Storytelling Script to screen: Week 12: 9/5/18: Concept art update in production bible.

In week 12 of the course my Intro to making of work had been handed in which meant my next task was updating the production bible and finishing the animatic. I updated the bible with recent work but it still required some art on the opera house and the streets of Paris itself for the animatic and feature length novel. Using my found research I sketched out the backstage area. However I felt this was rather difficult as the image I was using wasn't very clear. I  decided to use my phone for clearer images and it helped greatly. One difficult sketch was that of the exterior of the Opera Garnier itself as it was a very detailed architectural building and the details in the images were rather obscured to sketch from. So I sketched the basic details and some of the patterns within.

I did this as a four point perspective drawing as I was beginning to get to grips with the method and this exterior scene seemed perfect for it.

The buildings in Paris were in different shapes and their roofs seemed more curved than here in the UK so using my photos from my trip with Trafford College last year I sketched out a line of buildings and using images of 19th century Paris to keep the authenticity of my film alive. This building line was

inspired by looking at the art of Frozen and Big Hero 6 for inspiration on what could go into my production bible and I did a sketch of the padlock bridge in Paris given its significance of how people place padlocks on the bridge to show their love for each other, this seemed the ideal first meeting place for the two main characters.

I felt rather unsure about the current presentation of my production bible, as it was essentially an art of book. So to gain inspiration I looked at some art of books that were present in the maker space. looking at the layout of the page it seems they included elements such as props and tools
used in such stories as KUBO, and this made me want to add a sketch of the cobblers tools to the section about the shoe shop. One other was the layout of the images that they were small but still visible whilst double pages were used for things like the storyboards and intro pages to that particular section. I decided to follow a similar principle.

So I altered some things in my bible such as the size and layout of the shoe store concept art and the early sketches as this was an A4 scaled PDF I would be producing. However I would need to consider  if I would be binding this as an A5 scaled book later in the week given the presentation of the words and images. I showed this to Annabeth for her opinion and she suggested saving multiple versions since in the event that InDesign crashed I would still have another version to build upon, this seemed to make sense to me given my Mac's recent behavior in some programs.

The sketches that I had done were scanned in the library and saved onto my USB so I could start work on colouring them in. The idea being that if I did the final concept art today I would be further along in my module schedule and then I could focus on doing the animatic tomorrow. I would save the bridge scene as a style frame which would be done in watercolour whilst the concept art scenes would be done in Clip Studio Paint.

I began by enhancing the floor plan of the opera stage that I did several weeks ago, the same way I did the shoe store plan by colouring the lines in white and the background blue to make it look like a blue print. When doing the buildings such as the Paris streets and the Opera house I paid close attention to the detail in the buildings colours. These were introduced as flat colours on the enhanced lines, then using the ink brush tool added texture and shadowing. Luckily as I found on the shoe shop sketch the pencil lines and shadings when enhanced in Photoshop aided the shadowing and presentation.

The Paris street buildings were done using flat colours as I was on a tight schedule and I was feeling inspired by the storyboard art of The Incredibles which was flat colours so I followed a similar principle. Once my illustrations were complete I added them to the production bible and it was beginning to make progress.

I used watercolour paints at home to finish the style frame and referenced from a picture of the bridge on Google and using orange, blue and yellow watercolours to represent the afternoon sky as it would be a good setting for the characters meeting.

Looking back I feel that I've made significant progress on my storytelling script to screen module and on the production bible. My hope is if I can get the work in the bible completed and refined I can make an A5 sized document and book bind it ready for submission next week. However if I had enough time I would've done some things differently, one of which would be to show Annabeth the current state of my bible to see if it would be okay to convert to a book when completed this way I would know if I wasn't jumping the gun as I'm anxious to start book binding. I would also have made a start on inking the scenes for my animatic given what I had planned.

In conclusion I would think I'm making progress and should have this module completed and submitted by next week. In future I shall list my priorities for the module and ask for a second opinion on my bible layout and presentation.
