The day before our hand in date had arrived and I had initially reserved the time to look over my blog with Annabeth to see if I didn't miss anything in my work. However in light of looking at the brief it seemed there was a time limit of ten minutes on the essay where as my essay was 20 minutes long. I was feeling agitated and anxious as I had put a lot into this essay which caused me a lot of stress over the past few weeks.
First version
I asked Annabeth's opinion on this matter and she said this was the point of teaching us editing so that we could edit out or sacrifice elements of our essays to make a condensed final version. I was relived when she mentioned I could still keep the original version of the essay as a Directors cut/deleted footage. I set to work on condensing my essay, however this was rather difficult as I liked a lot of the things I had included such as the opening and time transitions. However desperate times called for desperate measures. I began to think of what the editors of the Incredibles went through when they were editing their work and how they had to cut some scenes out of the movie such as the original plane attack scene or opening scene.
I went through my essay and removed the opening, as well as the sections about the Japanese approach to the animation world which was rather disheartening. I even went as far, as going into the original files and editing some elements such as the duration of the opening to Cars, and the time between the transitions from Beauty and the Beast to Quest for Camelot. I decreased the spaces between dialogue to better improve the time. These were placed into a Premier file which I discovered had a trim to work area function the whole time. I was furious with this development as it would've saved me a lot of time and trouble when doing the essay sections and the time it was meant to run to if I had found out the time span sooner.
I had managed to reduce it down to a total of 13 minutes which Annabeth said was fine as it was an example of editing work and that the module allowed a little extension on the timing. This was then rendered with the opening title screens in a separate file in the University computer as my mac had gone through enough overheating already.
Edited video.
Looking back, I would think that this new video met the requirements of the brief and would be sufficient to submit hopefully today. In hindsight I should've taken a closer look at the brief in terms of the timespan of the essay so that I would know it was to be 10 minutes long which would've saved a lot of time, trouble and stress in my work. I should've asked the other members of the group or Annabeth about the duration of the essay to get some confirmation about what time to work towards and what I should include or exclude from the essay.
In conclusion I have done sufficient work on the essay despite the complications and I have a piece ready for submitting. In future I shall look closely at the brief and see how long the essay would need to run for and make a list of what elements to include.
