Animation context week 13: Hand in: 14/5/18: Magazine mock up designs:

Mock up piece 3

Week 13 of the module was the hand in week for all our modules and so this meant we had until
Friday to get our work completed and submitted. My main focus this week was the magazine article as my other module tasks had been completed aside from the production bible and book for script to screen. Johny informed me that I should do some work on mock up designs using inspiration from other artists magazines such as the ones I had been looking at for research and quotes. This made sense whilst he had a look at my near final draft for the essay.

So I set to work on doing the magazine mock up piece, I decided for my first version to look at the Concept Artist magazine pages by ImagineFX. Looking at the magazine I could see their work was on either a whole page spread or spread across a double page. Many of the backgrounds were completely white and some were coloured. So I decided to follow a similar principle but apply my own creativity on the appearance. To start, using my current essay draft I copied and pasted the beginning paragraphs into the template on InDesign. In the magazine the paragraphs were in columns of writing so I followed this principle. Working on the text I needed to introduce images of concept art. The first was a whole page piece of Hiro from Big Hero 6 as I liked the way it looked on my last mock up piece.

In my recent draft I had incorporated case studies advised by Johny on the different areas of how to be a  Concept artist, such as colour, perspective and creative thinking. In the titles I incorporated my comic book speech boxes and used marker felt text, as I felt a graphic approach was in order as this
was an art related subject. In the colour case study I incorporated images from google of the colour wheel and the different main colours primary, secondary and tertiary. In doing perspective I decided to have some perspective images from google in place until I could scan and use the page of the Digital manga book that I was using in this exercise.

I felt I needed to stay close to the bibliography as I was using quotes and images researched from books and computers to show my response to it. I was also keeping in mind the image to text ratio to make sure there was an even number of text and images even if it meant sacrificing any images I liked. I felt what went well the most were the artist case study pages on Loish and Paul Sullivan as I was using my comic boarders and images I had collected from the internet as reference to their blogs and books. One element that was hard to obtain was an image of the artists themselves, so I looked to

their blogs, Loish had an illustration self portrait on Deviant art whilst Sullivan had a side image of his face on his blog.

I would be referencing the images I had used with Harvard but for now I was experimenting with layout ideas and columns. However one area of the essay I felt to be difficult was the section on creative thinking as I wasn't sure what images to include on this subject. This clearly meant I would need to do some image research on different areas of thinking and possibly find a way of condensing my essay draft. Something I shall likely receive in my feedback. In the conclusion it was a collection of some of my artwork as it included my personal view on concept art, so I used images and illustration from my Artist and the Mermaid project to show my own perspective.

This I felt was a good addition to the work but couldn't help but worry if this was adding more images and less text. Upon completion I created screen shots of the pages for documentation, and also saved a duplicate file called version 2 should I choose to make any alterations to my design as I seek more inspiration be it from my mood boards or art magazines at home.

Looking back on this session I would think I've made a good start but may still need to consider some elements when I receive my
feedback on my essay draft and do a second design piece in response. I would've tried somethings differently such as looking at my mood boards for further design inspiration into my magazine. In hindsight I should've considered emailing my screenshots to Johny for his opinion so he can look at the image to text ratio and see which areas I would need to cut out or condense on.

In conclusion I did like the first design but shall continue to work on a second alternative idea for my work. In future I shall look closely at my image to text ratio and see what it is I need to cut down and focus on.
