Animation 102: week 11: 4/5/18: Module review and constraints 2.0.

In week 11 of Animation 102 it was drawing close to the hand in for the modules, and so we needed to work double time to get our work ready for the hand in date. We first reviewed our work from this week and in my case that was the first constraints animation and the next version of my short story. Whilst my constraints animation did receive some feedback Joe commented on the movement of the hands which I knew would be an obvious area to work on. In my short story there was another motion of the moving furniture which couldn't be helped due to the magnets lack of power. Another notion was the use of sound in this animation which Joe said did take away the audience from the exercise.

The group reviewed some points regarding that I should look at performance and timing in the constraints and the short story but otherwise they were impressed. Joe then brought up the matter of the module and that we would be marked on our other attempts in the exercises we did in Maya and stopmotion. We were then sent to do our work and I decided to do some more rendering of my work. However when I tried on the Uni computers the rendering didn't seem to work and I wasn't sure why, I was surprised.

Seeing as how, I had brought in my mac to do my video essay I decided to try on that, but at the same time I was worried about how different it would be to the Uni computer. When I opened the work in the mac the layout was roughly the same and so was the renderer, so I applied the settings that I learned from the previous week, and this seemed to render very well. I then worked to do a second attempt at the constraints in Maya. Learning from before I first animated the character rig to the point where it would touch the box before key framing the IK/FK settings which I had adjusted so the hands were on the box before I started animating. The locators were then applied to the box corners and hands constraining/parenting them to the hands so that when the box moved the hand would to.

However when I animated the rig rising up the box didn't move with it. I felt stupid that I had used the constraints in the way I was shown and it didn't work. However when I tried highlighting the hands and box I discovered I could still move them all including the locators. So as I animated and added key frames to the rig lifting the box and vice versa, the box moved and the rig held it. It was then a matter of putting down the box and deactivating the IK/FK blends.

I asked for Joes feedback and he said I should look at the speed the character was kneeling down and at the feet positions, given my use of the reference footage. I used the graph editor and slowed down the decent by slightly angling the movement lines near the key frame. The feet were then altered to move in a position that was wide apart to compensate the weight of the box. The animation was rendered and then saved to a file.

Looking back I would think that I have made a significant improvement on my understanding of the constraints, however I feel that I still have a lot to learn about this. In terms of the brief I was worried about the submissions and what it was that I had and hadn't done due to conflicting agendas in the other modules. In hindsight I  should've taken some time to review what animations I'd done in Maya and stopmotion to see if I had missed anything that way I could work on catching up on the brief.

Overall though I would think that I'm getting on track for handing in my module work and meeting the hand in deadline all I need do is assess which exercises to include in the show reel. In future I shall review my exercises from the past few months to assess which ones I have yet to do or which ones I have done.
