Storywriting Script to screen: Week 6: 7/3/18: Character idea development with Anthromorphic animals.
In the wake of Annabeth's script writing presentation I set to work on doing further concept artwork for my production bible and it was a good idea to further develop my characters as Anthropomorphic animals/furies. I decided to do some further work on Joseph's character design using my research boards into 19th century fashion and Furry art. When developing Josephs design further I wanted to make it look more human but at the same time something more cartoon like. The look for his clothes and hair style was a consideration too as looking back on my character description sheets from the first three sessions of the module I wasn't sure about how to follow it given the change of ideas.
In my research of furry art it shows the colour of the hair seems to relate to the characters fur colour such as grey fur dark black hair. I would need to consult Annabeth on this matter further but given advice last week and that there were no rules to this art style I would just need to follow my instincts. On the matter of the hair I wanted to make the hair as overgrown fur and at the same time make the ears visible. That's when I remembered one of my favorite manga novels/Anime films The Wolf Children which seems to follow a similar basis of human animal characters, so I conducted some quick research into images of the wolf children to get an idea of the hair style.
Looking at the images it seems the ears are a part of the hair when the children are in wolf form and that sometimes the hair doesn't match the fur when they're younger.
A similar instance is seen in Studio Gibli's The Cat Returns which was actually some of the images I'd used in my research board. Using this information I translated it into my character sketches and near developed designs. I used a simple standing pose for my colourways experiment that I would conduct later at home with the graphics title. I was feeling completely immersed in doing my artwork
as this was one element of the animation course that I was most passionate about. The fact that I only just remembered one of my favorite films was a realisation that I didn't think to look at that sooner when I was considering Anthropomorphic animals as characters.
Looking on the brief I knew what it was I had to do starting with the pose sheets of each character so I sketched out simple poses such as the character holding a wooden crate of ballet shoes, him watching the ballet dancer from back stage and some simple walking whilst carrying the crate. By sessions end I had produced a lot of work for the pose sheets and would continue development over the next few weeks into colourways and turnarounds.
Looking back on the session there were somethings that I would've done differently. Starting with the matter of the
character description sheets, I should've looked for Annabeth to discuss this matter further since given my change of direction I would need to resolve this matter. I would also have booked out a graphics tablet from siso so that I could start work on my colourways piece straight away to help further the process and work on other character developments/sketches. In hindsight I should've approached the matter of colour with some colouring pencils to try out any other ideas or gone to do some research in the library into furry art and colours.
The situation seemed to develop which hindered my ability to consider the ideas of colour, but remembering one of my favorite anime films seemed to help this matter ever so slightly. In conclusion I would think that I had made a significant start into developing my character ideas and developments in the use of furry art and that I look forward to continuous development over the Easter break even generating new ideas for the designs.
In future I shall look at the use of watching furry/Anthropomorphic animal films or anime to give me some further inspiration and ideas for my character developments. I shall also discuss the matter of the character description sheets with Annabeth to see if I would need to start again from scratch or just see how the colour ways sheets work out before coming to a decision.
