This week in Life drawing we would be looking at figure drawing. The task being that we would be placed into groups of four and take up a pose with a specific theme and capture the movements in our observational sketches. The main focus was on the line of action in the drawing as it we learned in past classes would help in the posing of the characters in pose sheets. We began the exercise and Paulina began posing first which was a pose of her touching her feet. We took several minutes sketching the pose and then moved to the second pose and sketched the next few which ended with her arms in the air in a standing pose. I felt this was a good exercise to do and wondered how it would help in the development of my character art.
Munty was next in doing the poses which was a run and start to end in a simple crouching. My pose was holding a large machine gun to then move forward in a run. I felt it was rather difficult to hold my position without smiling or laughing and it seems others were having the same issue. I felt my limbs cramping as I tried to hold my poses as I moved to each one, to try and correct this I stretched my limbs before the next pose as I learned from the model in Life Drawing classes in College.
Maddie was next on the poses and it was taking a kneeling position on a chair, as Chris told us we could use props in our poses. I decided to colour the line of action in a red colouring pencil, and sketch the weight line in the middle using a normal pencil. The poses were then sketched and I was begining to get a feel for the idea of using the line of action in figure drawing and the end figure drawings proved it.
Upon completing this task we were told we could practice this method on our character designs for our storytelling projects. Annabeth suggested showing my work on my Dancer and the Shoe maker story specifically Elise the dancer and since I was starting to sketch out ideas I decided to show him for an opinion on matters such as the dance poses. Chris suggested looking at dance poses for ballet dancers, thankfully I had some illustrations in my phone showing ballet dancer moves and poses. Using these I translated them into the pose sheets for the character.
I did some dance poses of the ballet dancer and exaggerated some of them such as the splits pose and a stretching pose. I continued experimenting with this on other sketches and I felt it was helping very well for these types of posing. I showed them to Chris and he seemed impressed but suggested more dynamic poses for the dancer and possibly look at movies that use ballet dancing as a theme. Looking back on this session I would think the benefits of the line of action and weight line were very useful in developing the pose sheet for my characters in the storytelling project.
This I feel is something to further experiment with at home for independent study. I would possibly have done something differently in terms of the poses and conduct research into dance poses to translate into the pose sheets and see how those movements could work within the storyboards when the time comes. In hindsight I should've looked at alternate dance movements and translated them into a simple timeline of movements. In conclusion I would think that I have made significant progress on my storytelling project and in terms of character pose sheets and what I've learned will aid in the development of future pose sheets in character design.
In future I shall conduct further research into dance poses to aid in the development of Elise's pose sheet and the other dancers in the group in the story. Otherwise I am pleased with what I have produced today and has further developed my story development and production bible.
