Story telling script to screen: Easter break: 5/4/18: Supporting characters and pose sheets:

In the final week of the easter break I worked on the supporting characters and their pose sheets. The supporting characters were Joseph's Uncle John, Julianna and the antagonist Elias. I had an idea for their desired looks but referenced to my research of 19th century fashion to get an idea for clothing. The cat species that I used were Birman, Persian and Bengal cat as from my sketches of the characters as cats I felt they best suited their personalities. The Persian cat suited Elias as he would be the arrogant villain in the story (feature length version) and the Persian is known for being a villains choice of cat in past films.

I felt the bengal suited Julianna (Elises best friend) as it looked like a dancer to support the other dancers in this story or in the crowds, and I liked the way the character sketch looked. In terms of Josephs uncle the birman seemed to suit that of a mid 30's shop owner which John is and seems to suit the character of Josephs uncle. I sketched out the designs and seemed to like the look and appearance and noted down their age and personalities.

Upon completion I worked on the pose sheets. I realised that Josephs uncle would be in the store a lot so I sketched him packing up boxes and looking through documents. However I felt I needed to add sketches that fitted around his character description and I felt that he would turn down his creative nephews ideas a lot but not out of absent mindedness of his nephews potential but to encourage it further and hope to use his work on his own terms. At the same time though when he finds out his nephews fallen in love with a higher society girl he thinks he's following in his crazy brothers footsteps. I did some sketches in response to this and I felt it responded well to his personality.

In terms of Juliannas character, I wanted Elise to have a companion in this story to show she has someone to share her secrets with and to support her through times of hardship much like a sister. In this story she would be the first dancer that Joseph meets when delivering the shoes, but she just brushes him off not wanting to talk to him like a teenager. Much like Elise I did some dance poses, and even some action positions such as her hands on her hips and some facial expressions that she'll have over the course of the feature length story.

However I also wanted to see how the characters would walk as I would be animating their tails moving as they walked so on Juliana's pose sheet I had her walking to see how the tail would move from side to side as she walked.

Elias, the villain of the story's pose sheet was tricky and hard to get the correct poses so I sought some inspiration. I listened to the soundtrack of Beauty and the Beast and as I listened I sketched the character and created his very personality. Elias would be an arrogant rich kid who relies on his good looks and money, and seeing as how Elise is beautiful he takes an instant interest in her and tries to win her over but she doesn't return her affections as she doesn't want to be with him, though her farther may see otherwise.

I communicated this story through the sketches of him flexing his muscles and having a devilish smile to try and win over some girls. I felt a scene idea was needed, so I had him holding the bars of a bridge and has an angry expression on his face indicating he's seen something he didn't want to see, as well as, a worms eye view sketch of him looking down on someone namely a scene from the preview animatic.

I felt these were very good pose sheet and I would work on turnarounds and colour ways sheets for them in due course but be ready in time for the next session with Annabeth when we started to put the production bible together. I was making good progress given the other projects that I needed to do for the video essay. However at the same time I felt that my divided focus was hindering some progress in my work as I wasn't sure what to do but I knew that after doing the green screening I would need to make up for lost time.

Looking back I would think I did good work on the pose sheets and that listening to the soundtrack of a film that I liked helped in further developing my characters through the pose sheets. One bad element would be the ambitious poses and shots of what I was doing I also should've looked at doing the colour ways sheets straight after.

In hindsight I should've prioritised my work and looked at what needed to be done immediately be it the green screen preparation for intro to making of or the work for storytelling script to screen. However I did work fast and took the time to consider what to do for the story telling module. I couldn't help but feel that I was adding more to my work load with the additional characters as I was in the feature length story mindset which wasn't a good place to be.

In conclusion I made the required effort for the pose sheets of the supporting characters and villains. I would think I would do things differently such as doing the colour ways sheets and turnarounds straight after the completion of this work. However I am currently satisfied with what I have done today, and am working harder to produce more work.

In future I shall priorities my work in the modules over a given break and see what requires my full attention and what can be completed at a later date.
