Maker space activity: 21/2/18: AR/VR activities.

This week in the maker space we were given the chance to play around with AR (Augmented reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) technology to show us what tools we could use for elements such as our video essays or future modules. I was feeling rather intrigued by the technology and never had the chance to experience it but to find that today we would was an exciting development. We were shown the concept of 360 technology and learned it was the baby end of the VR technology and how it works on three axis basis to make it look like we were looking round a courtyard.

Annabeth had brought in some examples of 360, and VR cameras for us to play around with and there was the activity for us to create our own 360 piece using built sets. We played around with the cameras and I was surprised that the 360/VR camera acted the same way as a set of fish eyes. What surprised me more was the way to create a 360 set with the camera and how it worked the same way as stopmotion. The idea being that the camera would take a shot then move the camera around and take another ext. The cameras were handed round along with a simple VR headset. Upon trying the headset I could see myself inside a prison cell.

I could see words appearing on the walls and I was all but immersed in the experience. However upon removing the headset I was feeling dizzy and disoriented, and Holly did warn me that it would make me feel dizzy after a while. I would suspect it was because it seemed like I'd just left another dimension it reminded me of an episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Upon the experience I set to work on the 360 task and I constructed a small shack using red and black cardboard. Using what I'd learned about nets I created the desired net and filled in the windows with a black marker pen  but left a gap in the tabs to make way for an open door.

Tabs on the roof area were used to glue down a rectangle of black cardboard which acted as the roof. This was cut out using a craft knife on a cutting mat and cut away from my fingers to avoid any injuries. The net was then glued together and was taken over to the 360 camera where me and other members of the group began doing the 360 piece. We moved our pieces around as Paulina took the photos using the camera. This would then be taken and edited by Annabeth to be finalised at a later date.

Looking back, I would think that todays session has given me a real inside look at the technology behind VR,360 and AR technology. I could see that many of the students in the room were seeing the attributes of this for their video essays, I could see some possibilities too but I would need time to consider what I would be using in my essay before considering the technology or methods. I would do some things differently such as spending more time looking at the 360 tech to see its attributes for future consideration in the course.

In conclusion, I would think that today was very insightful and innovated, it has given me much to consider for my essay in Intro to the Making of. In future I shall conduct further research into the technology and see how it would benefit me and my projects.
