Week commencing week 11 of Intro to the Making of, I started work on my time transition effect section of my video essay. I had previously attempted some home made green screening with my zoetrope along with the animation of the clock in the zoetrope turning backwards. These two were imported into Premier Pro and I began the process. The first thing to do was add the ultra key to the green screen footage. I went into video effects and found the keying option where the ultra key was located then added it to the clip effects. The clock animation was added to the timeline and the clock appeared rather small so I adjusted the scale of the piece. In the timing of the zoetrope I made sure to capture the faster spinning, and shortened it down to about a near 6 second interval between transitions.
However the time transition clip was too short and so several copies of the clips were imported into the timeline so it could keep up with the zoetrope spin. However I couldn't help but notice that the clock kept blacking out in the near ending frames. I felt this wasn't a good means of presentation in the final version so I clipped of the black outs on each of the frames. However this was just one of many concerns, the biggest being that the shadowing and folds in the fabric were caught along with the zoetrope. This was taking a lot away when I lowered the opacity so that the time animation could be seen from behind it.
I then tried playing around with the various settings which just caused more and more problems for the animation. I decided instead to look for some music for the transition so I searched the Youtube audio library for time travel like music and I found one piece of music called Tick Tock and the way it sounded seemed to fit the theme of the animation very well and so I downloaded it along with the sounds of a ticking clock.
I didn't however include these in the animation as it would only be in the essay scene where the time travel begins would I add the soundtrack.
Looking back I would think this was a good animation piece but there is still room for improvement. One area would be the green screening, specifically the lighting and smoothness of the fabric to make sure I didn't capture any shadows in the piece. This did however had the effect of causing an old age footage effect, which did fit into the category of time travel. I would think that the idea of the transition was solid but it was just the matter of creating a smooth presentation of animation in the clock animation instead of it stalling at certain points. In hindsight I should've expected a first attempt at this piece wouldn't be entirely successful but this left room for improvements in the second version.
In conclusion this first attempt was a good try at the transition animation for my essay and over the next week I shall create a more refined version. In future I shall make sure that the green screen fabric is much smoother and less wrinkled before I proceed into the filming process.
