Day off task: Week 10: Green screen in Premier Pro, 26/4/18: Video essay composition.

In my Day off task I worked on doing some green screening for my video essay in premier pro, with new found knowledge given to me by Annabeth. I opened premier and imported my first green screen file from the easter break. Before doing so I had created a background piece using watercolour paints which was then enhanced in Photoshop. I used 4 point perspective as Chris informed me on Tuesday, that the use of this could be useful and I decided since my green screen was inside a room this would be the best approach. I enhanced this in photoshop using the filter gallery Paint Daubs, to make it look more presentable.

This was then imported into Premier, and to apply it to the green screen, I used the effects controls in the selected clip and then in the video effects, I selected the keying and the alpha key in the options and applied it to the clip. Much like After Effects the green screening could be selected with a colour drop tool I felt this was a rather simple task and when applied the painted background could be seen. This was scaled down to fit the scene. I then set the keying to aggressive to better blend the two scenes together just as they did in the test run.

Home made  greenscreening.

I remembered from several weeks ago that the dialogue wasn't very clear and though the volumes could be altered it didn't seem very clear so I used my phone to record my voice using my script from the starting shot. I felt it was time to do the time transition for my essay, this was the time to attempt some home green screening using green fabric I'd purchased from Hobbycraft to try some work over the holidays. The fabric was pinned to my drawing board and using the daylight and a lit lamp to show the green. I felt rather nervous whether this would actually work or whether I would need to do this in university but never the less I felt I had to at least try. I realised I couldn't let my hand be seen in the shot so I decided to use the lamps holding point to hand the zoetrope onto. It didn't seemed balanced so I taped it to the rod to make sure it stayed straight and had a good spin.

I started the spin and recorded this on my phone, but made sure that the recording quality was sufficient. However as I recorded the spin seemed a little unbalanced.

However I thought this could work to my advantage to show the balance of time within the time stream that it was spinning in. Later I would use premier to create the transition effect. However I would need the background of the animation. So using the clocks from my zoetrope I used Adobe Animate to create an animation of the clocks hands spinning to show the animation inside the zoetrope. The clocks were saved individually then imported one by one as keyframes. These were then rescaled and aligned using the Onion Skinning. I felt this was making progress and upon playing the animation it did look a lot like the animation seen inside the zoetrope when spinning. This was saved and exported to After Effects for rendering.

This was saved as a looping gif to see how if it could be any viable use in the continuous looping effect of the timeline. Looking back I would say that I've made a good start in terms of the transition animation between the different time traveling frames, and to find that I can lower the opacity in the green screen layer to make it look like I've disappeared into time was a very good effect to consider. However I should've done more. If I had the time between working on other module projects I would've made the transition effect in Premier/After effects so that then I could add more to the essay and make some headway in its development and hopefully have it ready for submission. However I would still require the use of other background plates for other scenes.

In hindsight I should've produced more background plates before hand so that I could make better progress. I may do this later in the week and add it to the video essay file so that later I could render the final piece into one scene section. In conclusion I would think that the use of home made green screening maybe a good approach for small objects such as the zoetrope. In future I shall make sure I do more work upon this, and make progress on my first few sections of my video essay which shall lead to a final composition.
