Animation 102: Week 8: 13/4/18: Work review and lifting heavy/light objects.

Week 8's session of Animation 102, we reviewed the work we had been producing over the easter break, and we would be moving onto the next exercise which was lifting objects. I realised one of the animations that needed looking at would be my pushing and pulling in Maya along with the perfected walk animation. I showed them to my group, and they had a lot of opinions about my work which were all reasonable and within reason as I noticed some of them myself. One of particular reoccurrence was the movement of the feet when they were supposed to be holding in place on the walk and in the pushing and pulling.

I could notice this myself and whilst I was feeling slightly down hearted I could see they were right but Johny reminded me that in this year we would be attempting each exercise and that if we wished it we could choose the media or method of animation for our submissions and my comfort area was stopmotion and 2D but I decided to work in all the medias to see how I could improve and refine my work. Other animations that needed improvement was the run and jump in the height of the jump which made me consider running using 1 capture frame in the running and 2 frame capture for the jump.

We looked at Adam and Ollie's work and I could tell certain elements of their work that required improvement. In Ollie's case it would be the arm movement in the armature and the power in the legs as regards his pushing work. Adams animations were very impressive and they did teach me something new, and one of those things was the use in rigs in running. This was an element I hadn't considered in my walk cycles and I felt stupid for not considering it sooner or even experiment with the possibility. Which brought us to this weeks animation task lifting and placing down boxes and for this we would be recording reference footage of us lifting boxes that Johny had provided.

I felt this would be a difficult task in Maya but the overall idea seemed difficult in terms of posing and positions. Hopefully what we learned in this session would help better my understanding of the matter. The key would be an angled body to compensate for the weight of the box pending on the weight of the boxes contents. I asked Aiden to help me record reference footage of myself picking up and putting down the box, in this we had to consider the story of the animation much like the theme of the module and for next semester.

We saw an example of an animation of our particular task. This seemed very complicated in presentation possibly because the animator was more experienced with animation but it gave us an idea of what we would be doing.

I had considered some ideas of my story and how to translate it into a storyboard/barsheet. The question was which animation media would I use stopmotion, Maya or 2D, I decided to place my decision on hold and for now stick with what I knew doing it in all medias. We were shown a page of the survival kit that covered the lifting movements and I realised it was time to use the book in the maya storyboards/barsheets. Johny and I discussed the matter of my improvements in my maya work particularly the foot holds in the walk and push and pull. The key was the graph editor and in the keyframes of the foot holds and it was to be in a linear frame to make the foot hold position. I found this to be helpful and with this I would refine and experiment with my current animations.

Looking back on this session I believe the feedback on my exercises was very helpful and would help in the improvement of my walk and pushing, pulling animations. In terms of this weeks exercise I would be very observant with the recorded reference footage in the animation. I would've possibly inquired about any further methods in refining my animations, but one element that I took away from this session is relying more on the graph editor for advanced movements especially for this task. I would've done some work in response to what I learned about creating more efficient foot holds using the graph editor to maximise its effectiveness.

In conclusion I would think what I've learned about this will help in my next few animations or improve on the current versions. I will start animating my lifting animations in Stopmotion then work on the Maya versions. In future I shall use the graph editor more in my animations to help refine the areas in the keyframes in terms of speed and holds in the animations.
