Week 7's session of Animation 102 before the easter break was focused on reviewing our work on the walk animations and moving onto our next animation assignment which was pushing and pulling animation. The idea being is that the rig/armature would be pulling or pushing on something like a door or handle. We reviewed some work on the walks and Johny suggested that my walking needed more work in terms of the distance between the contact points and to look at the guide again for further guidance. I felt I still had a lot to learn about doing the walk in Maya, so I would consider looking back at this. I was rather amazed by some students approach to the walks and I was amazed when Adam showed us an animation of an armature doing a Michael Jackson moonwalk.
This was actually one of the things I was thinking of doing in an exercise even tempted in the 101 unit but it seems Adam beat me to the punch. I felt that if I found the time I could experiment with more advanced moves. The group then split up to take reference footage of pushing and pulling something I was with Paige as we and a new group participant took footage of each other pushing on the walls of the uni campus floor and pulling on the stair railing. Earlier on we were shown a piece of animation in maya where the rig ran and jumped so we decided to take some reference footage of that should we decide to have a go.
I was later able to correct the play blast issue that I was having last night in Maya thanks to James and was able to properly render my animation.
Upon our return I translated the reference footage into barsheets for later use in the stopmotion suite. Using this I tried an animation on the buckid in Maya and referenced back to the reference footage. However Johny said it didn't need to be exact on the reference footage we were allowed to exaggerate things. One thing that he said confused me as we were told the first few days of the module, weren't allowed to use props of any kind in the animations. Johny however said it was okay with him to use props at least as guides in this instance.
For doing the exercise we needed to use the IK, FK functions on the hands to mimic the pushing actions. We were told the pushing would be easy but pulling would be a difficult matter. I decided to try the posing of the rig into a pushing position. I used the IK function on the hands when I rotated them into position on the wall. However the controls resisted until I got them lined up correctly. I moved the feet back slightly to get a feeling of the character struggling to push against the wall. I was trying to animate until the lesson was coming to a close.
Looking back on this session I would think I understand the concept of doing the pushing and
pulling exercise though I wasn't able to do a practical example in maya which was a little disappointing for me it seemed like I wasn't doing any work which isn't in my nature. I will have to look over this during the easter break as thats what it is meant for. If I had enough time I would've attempted an animation using the push bar sheet and the pull.
In hindsight I should've tried to find a computer in the campus that also supports Maya to try and do the animation exercise, however with what I learned I should be able to do the animation exercise at home. I would think looking at examples of the exercise was a good use of understanding of what we would be trying to do for the animation exercise. However, it seems that there were additional exercises to consider such as the run and jump, this seemed like an easy task to accomplish in stopmotion but Maya would be a different story, but never the less I shall try and approach this.
In conclusion I would think that I would possibly improve upon executing my maya exercise and start on a first attempt over the easter break. The knowledge and advice about my animations will help to improve and refine them into a better outcome.
In future I shall consider the timing of the lesson and what I need to do for the animation to work, and get a second opinion if necessary to help me further refine it. I shall execute a stopmotion animation and work on my maya work over the Easter break.
