This week in Story telling script to screen we looked at the topic of log lines and character archetypes for our stories. I was also looking for a way to condense my story into the 1 minute requirement of the module. In the lesson Annabeth showed us a presentation on Log lines for our characters, which was part of the pitching element of our animation stories to a production audience at a studio. We were shown a diagram of different personas done by a man named Carl Jung (1919) which took a psychological perspective on character archetypes whilst others such as Jean Annwright took the archetypes of cartoon heroes.
The different archetypes were as follows:
Heroes-classic trope- Heros journey tends to be an orphan: Harry Potter, Superman,
Shadow- antagonist- Darth Vader, Emperor Zarkon.
Mentor- Gandalf the Grey, Yoda, Master Splinter.
The Trickster:Loki, Joker, Riddler
The Ally/sidekick: Robin, April O'neil

Cartoon Archetype:examples of:
The blockhead: Were smarter than he is but defeated: Fred Flintstone
The Nave: Guys always in trouble: Ron Stoppable, Tails,
Fish out of Water: the misfit who doesn't fit into the situation:
The Zany-wild and crazy-Daffy&Donald Duck,
The Conniver- Not innocent buy really guilty: Lotor
The Underdog-Poor soul, struggling against justice, Kid Flash
The Coward: Always chicken and scared: Scooby Doo.
The point of this was to help flush out the log line for our characters, and to best describe the characters in just two simple lines. To aid us with this matter there was a guide we could look at on blackboard. Using this guide I did some notes and from this I generated my log line, " A gifted shoe maker crosses paths with a majestic dancer, who fall in love by their connection of being who they choose to be." At the same time I created a tag line for my story one thats been on my mind, "We can be who we choose to be". Annabeth agreed with the log and tag line. We talked about streamlining my story as it seemed too detailed and she possibly suggested looking at an alternate idea. However we soon found a way to streamline my story keeping my idea given I had already developed characters and turnarounds for todays session.
I was reminded how our outcome would be characters, style sheets and a final animatic of our chosen story not a fully animated version so there was no need to worry about style.

Feelings:
In seeing the character archetypes I could see the possibilities, and felt astounded that there was more to a character then just how they are presented it was part of their personality. Whilst I was working on my character turnarounds for my character Joseph I couldn't help but feel conflicted on what to focus on, but after seeing the guide on log lines I took to the task straight away making small notes and very powerful descriptive words that I felt fitted the characters very well indeed. I was still having trouble shortening my story, and when Annabeth was suggesting to go with something else I was rather hurt by this.
I had this story lined up for production and had thought out the characters very well and to be told to try another idea was not something I wished to hear. Thankfully with a little thinking we were able to shorten the story to what would be a small promo to the event such as shoe maker delivers shoes, sees a dancer, gets thrown out walks away rather amazed by what he'd seen. I could feel it coming together in my mind.
Evaluation:
At the time of the lesson, I thought I could do more on the character design element of the module given last weeks exercise. However learning about the archetypes of characters was an interesting subject to look at and it gave an interesting perspective on characters and personalities. However I didn't like the idea of doing an alternate story idea, but thanks to Annabeth's advice we were able to save my story project and cut it down to a simple short story for the 1 minute requirement. I was relieved when it was shortened and would act as an excellent promo for my illustrated story that I will work on in the summer break.
Analysis:
Looking back on the session has shown the attributes of archetypes and has shown me that there was more to a character then just designing it and writing, its true personality comes into play, so I could see the point of this lesson discussing the characters personalities. I realised I couldn't resolve the situation of shortening the story myself and asking for Annabeth's guidance on the matter was a logical move as it would help. Though thinking I should change ideas wasn't a good piece of advice but I did consider the possibilities. However when Annabeth explained the idea of using the basic elements such as the beginning of the story, and worked on from there. This was exceedingly helpful for the module and its requirements.
In conclusion, I would think that todays session was rather insightful, and the fact the introduction of the character archetypes has given me something to consider. I wish in future to possibly consider looking at ways to streamline my stories and could be of use in creating my story spines in future. I will still continue to develop my story bible in my journal and then add the scans to Indesign and begin producing it digitally so I have a starting point.
In future I shall look at examples of one minute short films to at least give me an idea of how much story I can fit into a one minute window. This would help me in my story writing and give me an idea for a story line to condense which in turn would help my reflection writing as well.
