Description:
In this weeks session of Animation Context Johny informed us that we would be covering the deadline of our essay drafts, planning a trip for the group, and an item of particular interest feedback on our statement of intent. In animation context Johny told us that many of our lessons wouldn't be campus based and that we would be taking trips outside of Media City, and thats what we would be doing sometime later in the month. Our destination would be Liverpool and to the galleries there such as the TATE gallery which I was familiar with from college, F.A.C.T (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) gallery which we were told was video gallery based, and lastly Liverpool Blue coat- school which apparently used to be a school in the centre of Liverpool but is now used for gallery space. We would be going around the time of week 7.
In terms of the essay we had just finished our statements and now we would be doing our drafts for our final essays and the deadline of which would be March 5th as we observed from the Academic calendar was close to the half term finish for Easter. Johny informed us this was done because during the three week break we would be given feedback on the draft and then build upon it to create a final piece. He would accept only one draft which we were told could alter and refine as we choose in different drafts. In terms of the statement of intent today we received feedback for our work, and in my case Johny told me that I would need to look at what I was trying to say in my article which was why Concept art was important in animation, and that in my down time I would need to do some reading of some of the books that I've listed in my annotated Bibliography and take notes on what I could include in my draft.
I could understand this and decided to build upon this feedback over this week between modules.
Feelings:
Upon learning about the trip out to Liverpool I did feel rather excited but at the same time rather nervous as this was my first University trip to Liverpool but I soon felt assured when Johny mentioned if we wanted to meet up a piccadilly train station we could, but we may need to pay for our own tickets in the event The University couldn't get us any. We were told we would be looking at the work of Roy Lichtenstein at the Tate I began to felt a trip down memory lane as I did some work on Lichtenstein back in High School. Upon learning about the draft deadline and how we would need to do work over the easter break it did make sense to me given this was three weeks the time span However I did have concerns for other module work. Upon receiving the feedback on my Statement of intent I was understanding some of the questions but I began to feel some doubts about some of my chosen sources of research and how I did the annotated bibliography, as well as the main topic of my essay.
Evaluation
At the time of receiving the feedback from Johny I knew that I would need to improve upon something, and receiving advice on what I could do. One thing was that I would need to specify what I would be using said book for such as seeking quotes, scanning for images or just general research. Johny mentioned about looking at a possible structure for my essay and what to do in the conclusion, and at that moment an idea popped into mind and that was including a quote from one of my favourite films that fitted the conclusion. I began to realise that I would need to do some research into some of the aspects of being a concept artist such as the colour theory, inspiration of artists/natural world and the referencing of my magazine. I had mentioned that I didn't see anything in the Harvard Referencing guide about magazines thankfully Johny mentioned a way of trying to search for what I needed which was helpful.
Analysis:
Learning of the deadline was very helpful as it gave me a time scale to work to for my first draft and knowing that in week 7 I would need to be vigilant for any details of the trip being posted by email or facebook group. I possibly would've looked at some of my books that I selected to see their relevance for my essay research or if they would need to be taken off the list. Johny did mention though things like this should remain on the list despite not being used in the essay.
Conclusion:
Looking back over this lesson there were some concerns and questions such as how we would be submitting our work through Blackboard and the Turnitin program, but we were assured we'd be given a guide on how to do this come the time to submit our draft. In retrospect to the annotated bibliography task I possibly would've consulted with Johny about further details into what needed to be included in the annotations and what significances we needed to mention about our chosen research sources. However from this I now know how to improve and what to consider when writing the draft for the essay and what to consider for each paragraph, and what to mention.
Action Plan:
If we do annotated bibliography's in the future for our statement of intent in the course I will ask for specifics for what I would need to mention in the annotations and the significances of my chosen books/blogs. With this beneficial feedback on my Statement of intent I will act upon it I shall take the time to read some of my research sources more specifically on areas covering concept artists and some of the qualities that it takes to become a concept artist. I may wish to also consider a layout structure for my essay and roughly note what to include for my work.
