Intro to Creative Play: 9/1/18: Sketchbook review: Alexander Montgomery @00491819

Over the course of the intro to creative play module we've been asked to keep a sketchbook of all the work we've done in this project and when doing our group work. Looking back on the sketchbook and the span of the project there were a few good and bad sketches that I had taken for documentation and research. This is a list of some of my favourite and most insightful sketches and research into the module and project.

1. Research pages into the city:

Having had experience with sketchbooks in the past on my art and design course I knew that the first thing that was needed was the research pages and sketches into the city itself. The research itself involved taking photos of areas in city's such as Manchester then sticking them into the sketchbook and doing sketches from the city landscapes using different methods of sketching be it inked or simple pencil sketching and blending. What I liked about the pages was the way I was communicating the city and its buildings and using what I understood about landscape drawing. However I did use one section of the pages for noting down my research on film noir. This brings me to a matter that some times my entries weren't in order and some did overlap a few entries for the project, this is something to reflect upon for future projects.

2. Psychogeography map:

One activity that I most enjoyed was doing the psychogeography map and wandering around the Media City campus to sketch objects and buildings around us. This was the chance to use my skills in observational drawing, though I still think my tonal sketching could use some improvements for future work pieces. One of my favourite sketching pieces was the old food van as shown above as I like to sketch vehicles for some of my work and helps me with elements like perspective. Another of my favourite sketches would be the dogs head and tram station at Media city as I like to do landscape pieces and even the smallest things when doing sketching as the smallest thing can become a story in itself.

We had to know the emotions we felt when doing this task and when seeing the dogs head statue of one of the past blue peter dogs it was a timely reminder of the past of television and the great memories that we had watching the dog on television all those years ago. Communicating my emotions in this piece were rather difficult as I didn't know how to communicate emotions in my work however I did try and communicate as best I could and I would think it worked out very well.

When doing the map itself I was confident I could make this into a camera like shape to relate to the theme of media city. However the end result wasn't exactly one of my best works of art but Annabeth assured us that this didn't have to be a work of art however when I saw everyone else work I was slightly disappointed that for once I hadn't done a good job. I tried to add colour at home to correct the roughness of the lines and final piece. It did improve some of the presentation on the map, this was clearly something I would have to refine if given the chance to do this again for a future project.

3. Experience on the tram sketches:

For the city project I decided one research angle would be on the tram as I have had some bad experiences on it in the mornings when I commute to Media City from Altrincham. I discretely took some photos of the tram journey to aid in my research and sketches of the steps of the journey before it gets cramped and hard to move. I captured distinct characteristics such as people pushing and shoving, as well as, complaining on the tram. Other additions included the passengers I see on board the tram like people reading books and teenagers on their phones. These were helpful when we were put into teams for our group projects and discussing ideas for our work. If I was given more time I would've added some colour and perhaps digitally illustrate them for possible animation scene ideas.

Looking back over my sketchbook I would say that I've contained within it the elements that helped in our research and decision for what angle to approach our group work. However If I could do the sketchbook over again I would possibly add more research and possible scene ideas for an animation project, this would be something to consider for our next project in creative play. I would possibly improve on the noted research and only use post stick notes for research into medias or methods before adding them to the sketchbook. Otherwise I was pleased with the work and animation work from our city life project that I've included in my sketchbook and hope that it will help in my grade submission.
