The topic of todays animation context lesson was focused primarily on how we may wish to plan and write our essays for our magazine articles in the module. We began by reviewing the article review work that we looked at last week which was what we shouldn't do in our essays, and hopefully we would be helping the next first years, and how we pulled apart the writing style and this even gave us the experience of a lecturer. In terms of todays session in showing us how we could plan our essays,we were shown a cycle diagram and we were told in this particular module we would be looking at a number of thinking models to help us plan and write our essays such as a planning cycle done in three simple stages.
1. Planning and structuring the essay
2. Finding sources of ideas and information: Research and magazine articles.
3.Write the essay.
We were reminded that if the subject we were studying didn't have any literature links or research sources of any kind we should avoid it as this could be something difficult to write about and it was advised that we do a literature search. Our attention was brought to a book PDF that Johnny had placed on Black board for us to look at as it was very useful and it hints at several things of interests such as the writing or structure styles we would look at as Johnny reminded us many sessions ago. We were told we could modify things as we go much like our animations, and possibly re visit our statements of intent and that we shouldn't do this when we hand it in.
The intro to our essays was weirdly the last thing we write using a clever use of time travel and that there were structures like this that we could use. There are guides to doing everything and how we are challenging the conventions of essay writing like doing this in a magazine style or even the style of an artist blog for example.Which brought us to the element of mind mapping our work, and there were rules to mind mapping such as more than one colour and how we needed to try and use key terminology and organising things in different ways.
The structure of the essay in the module was as follows.
intro 59 percent
Main arguement 80 percent of the main body
Conclusion 15 percent of length.
We then were told how it was a good idea of keeping multiple post stick notes as we learned from Annabeth this morning it was a good way to roughly lay out our essays. One thing that I didn't understand was that in this we didn't need to do primary research this was something on my college course of art and design that was crucial but I soon realised primary research was photography, but then I had a notion that this was secondary research that we were doing including books or elements of the internet or films for instance.
However in many essays there are very common writing mistakes specifically in the studying of the research. There were seven simple mistakes that we could make in the studying of the essay such as plagiarising the research that we do using lines or even sentences from our research claiming its ours which can cost us some marks. Another mistake would be another form of plagerism which would be plagiarising our own work or submitting a piece of work twice which won't count as a submission so we had to be extra careful. One mistake would also be collusion such as a secret collaboration to help make ones essay look perfect when its other peoples work which brought us to another issue which was contracting another person to write a piece of assessed work for another person and claim that its there work. There was also one issue that we all remembered from our time in examinations and that was taking any thing that we weren't supposed to into an exam to copy answers from that could lead to a disqualification. The final mistake was a most common one bribing someone to do the work or get a good mark.
Johnny then showed us an example of critic and a body of work showing us an alternative way of doing the module such as doing a video essay, and we were shown an example of one he did for saving private Ryan showing us a rather amusing image of Tom Hanks looking a lot like Rudolph the red nose reindeer. This was to show us the alternative of using a video essay something that we would be doing for Annabeth later in the Intro to making of module. For the moment we would be focussing on the magazine essay. We were, then told about an activity that we could do which was a 12 questionnaire activity over the holidays once we submitted our work.
We were then shown Johnnys video essay, and we were advised to take a critical eye to the concept of this video and upon watching it it was very detailed and insightful, and as it played through I kept feeling the impulse from the scenes of soldiers charging forwards into battle knowing that some may not make it back but do it for their freedom and country. This was actually what made me inspired to try and do some layouts of my magazine article pages over the Christmas break to see how I may wish to lay out my work for the essay, and conduct deeper research into concept art building upon my research but given recent rules I may write it differently culminating my research from the poster and research I will conduct over the holidays.
Looking back on the session it has shown us a way we could lay out our essays when it comes time to write a first draft attempt which will come together in development and refinement to a final piece. Over the holidays and semester I will try to write a first draft and see where it would take me in terms of refinement and conduct some research into magazine article layouts and use what I've learned to refine my work into a submittable piece of work for a final submission.
One thing that took my interest was a mini challenge that Johnny told us about near the end of a session and that was to count the number of shots in a video and produce a story board. The idea being was that we would take something from a film that we liked and then break it down into its component parts into a simple storyboard. This wasn't something we had to do but it would be a good exercise none the less and I would think that it sounds promising. This brought us to a point about most of our animation work and that would be that using Barsheets would be one thing in this course but we would be soon heading into the world of storyboarding which would be the most important element of our work.
Johnny advised that we looked at known storyboard artist Sherm Cohen who did the story board work of Spongebob squarepants who describes the storyboards he does as " an hour of life well spent."I was rather surprised to learn that there was a remarkable shortage of storyboard artists in the production of animation.
In conclusion todays session was surprising and insightful at the same time and I may look back on this over the holidays and do some work on my magazine layout and conduct research into possible layout ideas, for when we return from the Christmas holidays.
