This weeks session was to be on the method of film noir an old school method used in the days before colour television and for gritty detective shows. The key within it was the lighting of a scene and we were supposed to do a practical try out session of the method however due to complications we couldn't perform it so instead we were told to research the method to talk about in our blogs. So I went to the library to conduct research on the method, I personally recognised film noir not just in animation but in the world of graphic novels specifically Marvels Spiderman Noir.
Research:
In the world of films and television today we live in a world of colour but there is a method of animation, film and television that is still in existence today, and this method is called film noir.
Film Noir was a word coined by French film critics which began with critic Nino Frank in the year 1946. The genre of Film Noir is a form of black and white filming a method that exsisted before colour television it began in the year 1940 and the screenplays of the numerous films were inspired by gritty crime dramas in America and detective films following the coming of the War. The method of Film Noir primarily focused on the essence of black and white filming using camera lighting and work with the camera itself to create disoriented visual themes in the films.
The method's main focus was on the darker side of the human character in the film, and is used in such film genres like doomed romance, drama and shows the dark side of the main antagonist or the hero itself. In the genre characters have complex character profiles such as the anti hero, corrupt characters like the law enforcements, private eyes, cops, detectives and murders for example.
One example of these complex character complexes are in the male and female characters.
Male characters: In these films the male characters in some instances seek to escape their "mysterious past" and choose the path that they walk on and the choice could be an ambitious choice to follow the wishes of "dames"
Female characters: The female characters of the films are shown as two types of archetypes be it dutiful, reliable, trustworthy or loving women in romances or detective films as some are known to misdirect the detectives or antagonists, adding a double crossing personality. Some characters in films can be known to be tough and sweet hiding their true personalities.
The method of film noir is also a filming method used in horror movies such as secret beyond the door made in 1947 and The Night of the Hunter which was a thriller made in the year 1955, and was directed by Charles Laughton. This was a method used in the Disney stop motion film Frankenweenie as this was based of the classic horror film Frankensien directed by Tim Burton who is famous for his horror like stories and gothic like artwork adding to the horror of the genre.
