Description:
In the last few weeks of the creative play animation group project the time had come to create and finalise our animations ready for submission for the exhibition next Thursday. I was eager to get started and I decided to use Adobe Animate as this was the perfect opportunity to put this software to good use in this course as it works like Toon Boom. However first I needed to finish my title sequence for the Instagram account to shorten it down which thankfully I was able to and then I set to work on my bin animation. My initial plan was to animate the character then in After Effects I would place it on a video background to give sound and a moving picture behind the character. I began by importing the bin character from my Photoshop document into an Adobe Animate file and began animating the character. The main animating aspects of the character would be the eyes and mouth which involved lip synching which was something I was new to but I had started learning for this project and had done a chart of lip movements for my dialogue. However as I worked I couldn’t seem to make any progress on animating the character as there was another method of animation that I wanted to try for this project and this was painting on Acetate. I therefore decided to sketch out the characters and lip movements then work on a different approach for this animation project.
Feelings:
When I started the animation project I was very eager to start work and do my first 2D animation. However as I was trying to animate the character I was starting to feel conflicted in my choices of animating the character as my original plan was to do entirely digital animation but at the same time I felt I could use a different technique in this piece such as cel animation that I was recently made aware of and wanted to try. I felt that I hadn’t done much work in terms of animating the character and that made me feel disappointed in myself as normally I would use an approach that I had looked at and researched immediately in a final piece, but with this I couldn’t decide. This felt natural to a starting out animator in this course and I’m sure that others were feeling the same way that I was.
Evaluation:
Looking back on this current progress of work I began to think if I could’ve tried to do more animation on the project and decide on what method of 2D animation to use rather than start one animation but want to do another. I was beginning to think that I was losing my edge in working on my projects and how it could possibly impact my grade on this course. One thing that possibly went well was testing to see what elements would work against each other and what wouldn’t such as the imported video background didn’t seem to fit against the pre drawn character and this meant I would need to seek a different approach.
Analysis:
Looking closely at this issue I would possibly think that this session was about testing what would work and what wouldn’t so it wasn’t just about feeling conflicted in my choices of animation methods but seeing what would fit together and what wouldn’t. This would help impact my choice of animation and composition in my final piece.
Conclusion:
In conclusion whilst I didn’t do anything in terms of animation it had been an insightful session into how I may want to consider animating my final piece and to take the time to consider how I may wish to animate my final piece so that later in the development phase I wouldn’t be so conflicted in my decisions when approaching the animation.
Action Plan:
To prevent any set backs or conflict of decisions in the future I would possibly decide on what methods to use before the session and bring in the necessary materials so that I could make progress instead of messing around doing sketches and short animation processes, so that I can get some actual work done.
