Description:
In this week’s session of animation context we looked at a document centred around some of the aspects of Indesign looking at our statement of intent for our magazine articles and reviewing and analysing examples of past students work on this topic to give us an Idea of how we may want to do our approach and how not to layer out in terms of text and grammar, for this task we were divided into teams of five and would later describe what we looked at and what could be improved, in my team was Alisha, Beth and Paige. In the beginning of the session we discussed the matter of our academic year and what extra activities and briefs could be done before we returned for the next semester so that we weren’t oblivious to what we would be doing over the next semester.
Feelings:
As Johnny described to us about the academic year plan was feeling some relief to see when we would be finishing and for our terms to give me an idea of when we needed to come back. However as he went on describing the importance of submitting our work and that failures resulted in having to resubmit over the summer I was getting a little nervous as up until recently I was worried about my progress as I was caught between two modules of my work that needed to be submitted on time Creative Play and Animation 101 as both were important and I wasn’t sure which to approach as a question of priorities. In terms of the indesign document that we were shown I was thinking that this could be of use to me as I was having some difficulties with the page numbering and affecting all the master pages in Indesign in terms of the page numbers and I felt perhaps looking at this document would help me in those matters. The group activity I found to be very enjoyable and very insightful as I felt looking at another persons approach to the magazine article would be helpful and giving me a few ideas for my own approach.
This I felt was a chance of putting some English skills learned in High School and college as we would be analysing the students work and seeing what could’ve been improved. Looking at the article about Observe, Translate, Animate I was feeling surprised and shocked that the student had included a lot of mistakes and mispronunciation of words in the text and paragraphs but this seemed normal as this was a former first years work. When presenting our opinions and reflections on our articles I was amused by the way Chris’s group delivered their opinions as it seems he was deeply offended by what was in his work and I couldn’t help but agree with what I saw. I felt many ideas flowing through my head as I looked at the multiple articles put forward to us today and began to see my approach to this project form in my mind. However by sessions end I was still feeling a sense of concern as I wasn’t sure I’d keep up with the work load in terms of the modules and blogs and realised that a discussion with my tutor was required.
Evaluation:
Looking back on this lesson I could see that there was a lot to consider in terms of our time that we had left until our deadlines and the matter of prioritising our work. One thing that I wasn’t sure of was when exactly we needed to come back in after the Christmas break as whilst it said 29th Jan 2018 we were told that earlier in the month we needed to return to either submit our work or contribute to little tasks/briefs to prepare us for returning for the second semester of the course. However this was to me a little much but I realised that this was possibly a good idea to approach, and I may need to consult with Johnny about what best time to return after the Christmas break and if we would get a summer break as looking at the academic calendar there didn’t seem to be any indication.
Analysis:
Given what Johnny was describing to us I could see the sense in showing us the academic year and the importance of making sure our work in the modules was up to date and ready to submit. In terms of the submission day itself it made sense to hand in work earlier than the allotted time as we were told that people do queue up to get their work handed in and some even result in a late submission which would not be good for our grades. In terms of the indesign document it seemed to make sense that there was a guide for us to look at on Blackboard if we were having trouble with our page layouts or needed to know certain things when doing our articles. Showing us past students work made more sense as it would give us an idea of how others approached it in the past and how we may wish to improve on in our approaches. In addition deeply analysing the articles was communicating what mistakes they had made in this project and give us an idea of what not to do in our response to the module. One element would be that “quotes never run through five lines” which gave me an idea of how long a quote would need to last for in the article and not to centre it around one person or specialist in the field.
Conclusion:
Looking back on this lesson I would think that its given me a form of perspective and how important it was to prioritise our work so we would be ready for submission. I was still slightly unsure of how I would catch up on the workload that I had but I knew that I needed to find a way, and so it was a good suggestion to arrange a tutorial with my tutor to give me some assurance that I’m on the right track and how I may approach prioritising my work. I would think that I would’ve possibly asked further questions about how we presented our statement of intent just to see if I needed to refine or alter anything in my first draft.
Action Plan:
If we did this lesson again I would’ve taken notes on what the student had done in his or her work be it wrong or right just so that I would have an idea of what approaches to take in doing my own article for this module so I wouldn’t get stuck or obsess over anything in the articles development.
