In week 8's session of intro to creative play we would be discussing in our designated teams about our ideas and possible approaches to the ideas that we had in the group regarding the animation we had to create and submit before the 13th December deadline. We met in the maker space with the digital media students as Annabeth said that this was a module between the two courses of digital media and animation and over the next few weeks we would be working on our responses to the city brief which would be shown in an exhibition in the atrium of the Media City campus. In our responses we had to consider how we would represent the city element of the project and how we observe and translate the different elements of the environment making a link to the phrase that Joe keeps referring to in our animation work, Observe, Translate, Animate.
Annabeth explained to us that one of the key aspects was the different ways we could produce a response and how in fact the audience watching it could experience what is happening in the film. One thing we needed to take into account was thinking of our characters in our work not just thinking about Salford or Manchester, and that we could look at old or new ideas of approaching the animation element of our response to the city project. Annabeth also included an element that our group had actually considered for use in our work the element of the past proceeding to the future as it can be considered an effective influence. One thing we needed to consider was the possibility of a coalition between the two groups each bringing their individual skills to the table of this animation project to culminate it all together into a presentable response.
One thing that remained constant within this project and in fact the entire course was to get outside your normal comfort zone and into the unknown. In this task we had to factor in time management within our projects as we couldn't leave it to the last minute otherwise it would be a complete disaster for the team and the project itself. Within weeks 9-10 we had to work on ideas development for our projects and work on rough ideas and storyboards in our work. Upon reaching week 12 it would be about installing our work into the screens and viewing element in the atrium in the campus building and get the audience feedback. Given that we had only five weeks to go it would be all hands on deck from this point onwards, as the hand in would be December 13th. We also needed feedback from our tutors so that we didn't just hand it in without getting a second opinion, something that I followed back in College education. Upon the briefings completion we went to the base room and split into our individual teams and set to work on what we needed to do.
In our team we welcomed new member Kieran, who had been doing a number of city sketches within his sketchbook and together we discussed our ideas within our response to the city project and showing Kieren what it was we were going to approach. We discussed the matter of doing research for the project and what we had to approach in terms of script/storyboard writing, monologue/action scenes, walking around town to get ideas and inspiration, get footage and pictures to work with for our animations. We then looked into the matter of the faces on the inanimate objects that we would be using as characters in our animation. Beth had the very comedic idea of introducing a posh grammar to the bin who would be disgusted by the rubbish being thrown into him, and in response I drew a bin with a top hat and an eyeglass. We even looked at the faces of other characters such as the tram, bags and newspapers and I began sketching ideas in response, and Kieren sketched some city buildings and character ideas such as the ticket bill that people would get if they didn't pay for their tickets on time.
This was a very interesting character to work with and even consider the use of paper movement in the ticket as it walked. We realised we couldn't just focus on one general area of the city we just needed to look at the city in general and so a new name was needed. We looked at different names but out of them we went with a name I suggested which was life in the City, which we all agreed fitted the nature of what we were trying to do. As the afternoon progressed though I felt there was a lack of communication with the group possibly since me and Kieren were a bit quiet whilst Jolanta and Beth talked ideas and thinking that there wasn't much more to discuss. We were then approached by Annabeth and we explained what we were planning to do which was to bring inanimate objects to life and have them communicate with each other in conversation. Annabeth suggested that we should perhaps consider the possibilities of short films on instagram that update with a new tale nearly every week much like motion comics would.
This was considered to be a good suggestion which did make us think a little about this since we were having troubles with the total time of the animation, as we considered editing to an approximate of 2 minutes so Annabeth's suggestion may in fact be of use to us. As Jolanta and Beth left to conduct what we assumed would be research myself and Kieren took it upon ourselves to get the project on track, sketching character ideas, designs and even recording speech for this ticket character idea. Later we went to the library and split into different tasks. In learning about the pipeline of a feature film or short from the intro to creative play Star Wars in a minute film I knew the first thing we needed to do was work on a script for the animation so that we have something to work with when we develop our ideas as we produced them into a storyboard.
I decided to write the first draft of the script into short conversations so that in the event we did go for the short films idea we would at least have something to work with. This was a first draft to present to the group for feedback and input as this would be a team element that we needed to work on together. In the script I did elements and ideas we had already discussed and included some elements from todays session. Once saved and completed I joined Kieren as we sketched more character ideas, and I thought of a notion to try and include the faces as part of the metal and framing in the objects that we'd be using. This was inspired by the real life CGI elements in the live action version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast where the writers and 3d modellers used real life objects in CGI animation to create the castle servants in the film. I decided to try and take a similar approach in the objects and vehicles we'd be using as characters such as incorporating the face into the front of the tram or even eyes into the headlights. In the case of the bags it would be the words and logos on the bags themselves, even using eyes within the words or in rubbish screwed up and torn elements.
Whilst this maybe an impossibility it was a good idea to approach for this project to add some realism to what we were trying to do and think outside the box.
Looking back over this session I would think that the team was off to a good start but there were issues to work out such as communication and some faith in our teammates and hopefully together we could produce an excellent outcome. One thing that needed to be done over the course of the next few weeks would be to work on our desired path for our animation piece and consider the possibility in using the animation short Instagram idea that was put forward to us. Jolanta would start up a messenger group on Facebook so that we could stay in contact and discuss matters of the project and our progress. In conclusion I would say that we did need to improve in some areas of communications within the team but I had a feeling that we could all come together and work as one to produce a submittable outcome for our intro to creative play city project.
