Animation Context: Week 4: 16/10/17: Expert in the room.

This weeks session of Animation context was a recap on learning methods from last week and learning something new by oddly not understanding it. The start of the session we were given random names from a hat about certain topics and what we would do with these names would be known to us later. What I learned from this lesson was that in learning new things we start off not knowing we're not  good at something until we find out for ourselves. This seemed like something that I could relate to as I thought I'd be good at knitting but when I tried it in my College FMP I realised it was more challenging than I first thought until I came to the conclusion that knitting wasn't meant for me. The same thing could be said when I tried doing DIY book binding as I became fascinated by the illustrations on notebooks and wanted to create one of my own at first I thought I wasn't good at it but with more practice I got better at it and realised that it was good for me and saved me the expense of buying notebooks.

We learned that there are different approaches to learning be it listening to notes or even new get good at learning theories. We learned about three stages in learning and it actually related to the three years of our course and even the learning stages in our lives, these were as follows;

  • Pedagogy:An approach for teaching children

  • Andragogy: Teaching and learning for adults
  • Heutagogy: Becoming a self directed learner.
This was something that I didn't know about, so I learned something new and that there was a motivation for learning some instances was competition between students and teachers because as some films such as Disney's recent film success Cars 3 the student can become the teacher with the right motivation or just build up an ego. This was another element increasing ones self-esteem and doing good work within internal sources. When the time comes when we work together in a group, the key is collaboration and openness suggesting ideas to the group for them to be considered.

There are other methods to such as ambiguity and redundancy, I couldn't quite understand this but that is until Johnny explained that ambiguity was about things not being made very clear. This did seem familiar as I always ask for details before executing a task for independent study, whilst redundancy which I knew was about losing your job but was also known as something that just isn't relevant such as some elements such as briefs are closely linked to ambiguity whilst lectures are between these two elements. One thing that I didn't quite understand was how Johnny mentioned that confusion is our friend and this was linked to not understanding something until we do understand it in detail. We were then told about Chip Kidd who in actual fact was the designer of the Jurassic Park logo and this was where the learning methods came into play and why we refine and design our characters in our work.

In this redundancy is not a good thing because in our design process if we neglect even the smallest thing that could help us be it an idea or a recommendation within the group it could lead to a disaster as Johnny put it 'Never wear the same jacket' and that ambiguity was our friend on this course. After our break we reviewed the linking task that we were assigned last week and as we gave our answers it soon turned into a debate about the CGI and orgs in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, but the debate aside we were then told that things in this week were going to change and that we had to be more responsible for our own learning which was when we were briefed on our task for this week an activity called the expert in the room.

This was where the random words on paper came in the task was to research into these words as deep as we could just to discover their origins this would be a starting point and not just use google search.
There were three basic stages of this task and using the Harvard referencing system for some elements.

  1. Identify the origin of your word or phrase: Harvard
  2. You should find a piece of work that epitomises that concept: Harvard
  3. Using your specific skills test create a piece of work based on the research using said skill.
The word that I was given was Existenial Hum, I decided to do some research into this and it had something to do with a religious belief, about lasting desires and how hard it is to resist them. I found this questionable and didn't know how I could translate this into an art piece for my work and requested another word called misdirection which was something that I was familiar with and thought of something that could help. However given further thinking further along the line not understanding something was the key to this exercise and Johnny mentioned that it could be linked to Extentialism, which was philosophy this maybe something that I may revisit or perhaps review both words and see which is the more ambitious and creative to approach in terms of my skills set as a creative artist/illustrator. I have a lot to think about and process for this week even review what I learned and by next week I needed to have a two minute presentation in either PDF or powerpoint form and in this we needed to show the epitome of our work and the work created using text and images. I was slightly nervous about this but I decided to persist and try and no matter what never doubt in the work that I do because being a quitter wasn't what got me into this course but my willingness to try and refine my research methods and ideas for my work.
