The day of the expert in the room presentations had arrived and I was slightly nervous. The reason for this was because it's been my first ever presentation since my English classes back in College, and I wanted to make it look good. I was so worried that I nearly lost sleep over this and even making sure everything was in order before showing of the final product and even seeking advice from other students like Adam to see if I could gain guidance or a steer. What had me anxious was the time limit of two minutes and whilst I had a lot to say I wasn't sure if I could condense this into two minutes long presentation.
We started the presentation we were informed that there may not be enough time in the session for everyone to do their presentations and it would be continued for next weeks session for those who weren't able to do theirs. Throughout the presentation we had some ground rules to follow such as not to talk to each other or not to be scared in going up and presenting their pieces, this seemed familiar to what we had in speaking and listening in English classes in College. I decided to go third in the presentations as it would give me time to work on what to say for my presentation. In our presentations we had either power points or illustrations that we could view via the lady bug visualiser. When starting our presentations we had to say our names in case anyone didn't know each others names by now after spending time together as a group. When setting up our presentations if we wanted to keep it secret before the reveal we could use the controls on the computer desk to blank out the display screen to set up our power points.
In this course everything is assessed through presentation no exams or course work just the presentation, but there are opportunities in presentations such as pitching our ideas to a group of investors for example.
The first of our group to come up was Alicia who's word was the butterfly affect which was about a localised change of elements in our system such as global warming and any choice that we make could have consequences, and it talks about emotion and the effect of the butterfly wings. Her presentation seemed very clear presented and had references and some diagrams to communicate her point of view and I was surprised that it had a connection to chaos theory and the pendulum effect even having a video to show it. It seemed clear she had researched thoroughly into this subject. Elena was next to show off her research into her word which was Love Defies them in death and she showed us an illustration of the grim reaper playing with a masked woman and according to her research into the sentence came from one of Shakespeare's screen plays from Romeo and Juliet hence her use of Shakespeare in her illustrations.
The person the reaper was playing against was a muslim girl which to me didn't make sense that is until I learned that this was also connected to the freedom of lovers as in shakesperes century it was compulsory marriage meaning that we couldn't marry whoever we wanted which is shown in some of todays cultures so its clear she's made strong links in her research. She also made a specific reference to communicating with the other side which was about like gypsies and fortune tellers, hence the theme of her illustration and she even made a link to her home country spain in her work making a personal reference which seemed like a very good reference in her work and her title in love.
Next was my presentation into misdirection even though I thought I was going fourth I decided to go to get my presentation done and overcome my nervousness. I loaded up my presenation which began with my digital illustration of Misdirection (as shown below)
When starting my presentation with the defenition that I researched introducing misdirection as an action which directs us to the wrong place intentionally or accidentally something used in magic to make the people believe the trick is real when it isn't or used by con men to steal peoples stuff to take advantage of them, but my specific focus was how it was used in animation or television series such as Disney's Frozen/Big Hero 6 or in CW'S the Flash and an example of magicians work is in the work and deception of Appllo Robinson who I discovered whilst doing visual research in videos or watching films on the television. In my presentation I even included the mind map that I used to gather my ideas, research and references using the Harvard referencing for my videos or quotes taken from said videos or films. (See below)
Upon finishing my presentation I felt a great weight of anxiousness fall from my shoulders instead of causing more grief or worry for doing something that I haven't done in a long time. Plus it seemed that I didn't need to worry about the timer as it seemed that there was no time limit in this looking back at other presentations presented by the group. Adam was next in the presentation showing his work into the phrase Hidden in plain sight which was about something that defies apprehension but alludes our sight and one reference was the references in films such as Room A113 a classroom from the California institute of Arts where animators like John Lasseter and Brad Bird famous Pixar animators had studied in their journey to be animators at Disney. Said reference can be seen in Monster University, Up or even the Simpsons. He even made some references to things like Rick and Morty and even showing us an upside down picture of Margaret Thatcher that had the eyes flipped upside down and compared to the original image when flipped upside down showing us the illusion that we've been tricked and included a famous quote from Albert Einstein.
It was clear that we had all taken many approaches in our research into our chosen words which was a presentation in itself. However some of us like Axel didn't have a presentation and instead used the white board to keep it simple which was ironic since her word was keep it simple stupid and its definition was about keeping the characters simple and not over animate it such as a simple cube which seemed to make sense to me, and how it keeps a character simple rather than over exaggerating things. Even without a presentation I would say that Axel did indeed keep things simple in her presentation.
Chris's presentation seemed to revolve around something called the crossing the line 180 degree rule which seemed to revolve around the basic guideline for character interaction in a film or television series setting them apart from each other like knowing where they are or how we connect with the characters such as two people at a bar talking about selling heroin as shown in some of his videos and how the line was broken at times such as changing the dynamic of the characters. The line is further broken making the audience feel uneasy using certain characters do certain things making them go back and forth or changing positions. The basic example was apparently the audience seeing one side of a conversation which was illustrated with the picture of a stage.
From these presentations I was learning new things and given that many people weren't volunteering we would now be choosing people to come up and do their presentations after the first had finished. Ben was next and his work focused on something called Gestat which seemed to originate in 1820's Germany which seemed to be focused on negative space and how its used in animation and is used a lot in media such as logos for instance, a video was played showing this example on the royal blood band album cover. Despite not having any visual aids the only thing I would take from this is perhaps he should try to speak up as sometimes I couldn't understand what he was saying but otherwise he used one good visual aid in his work and that was a video.
Next in the group was Ollie who's presentation was focused on Occam's Razor which was apparently a problem solving principle and philosophy invented by a young boy many years ago, and roughly translated from latin a definition of the theory would be more things should not be used more than necessary, which didn't seem to make sense to me and in some of the drawings he made they represented how not to illustrate this or how to illustrate it such as a simplified equation made complicated and one was doing abstract art. He gave some meaningful examples in his work such as the Moon landing from decades ago and how we theorise things and that we can't apply this to guidance in scientific minds or that its the right method to stick to. This didn't make sense to me but the reference he made to the moon landing seemed to make more and more sense. Paige's presentation was focused on the word Cartesian logic which was invented by a man named Rene Des Cartes who was a philosopher and the word was a broad term and it seemed he did a lot for animation by creating a system that connected geometry and algebra which was the space in a computer programme or even the coordinates on the map and this is used everywhere which was interesting. Listening to Paige's presentation its clear she had looked deeply into this and made good on her references even looking into how we think we've woken up from a dream but in actual fact we're still there something linked to the Matrix.
Madelines presentation seemed to focus on an element in films and tv called method acting which was where an actor gets fully immersed into their characters like acting out or experiencing something that they might do. One example she gave was the actor who played the Joker on Suicide squad and the way he sent the actor who played Harley Quinn dead rats in the mail or even things that are considered disturbing to a normal person. This was something I could relate to as its seen in the actors from the live action Alvin and the Chipmunks film where in order to communicate with their characters they had to act like chipmunks themselves. As an illustration she created an inked piece which was an actor and a person with a mask which showed he was immersing in his role.
Through showing our presentations it seemed that some people didn't have some presentations to present to day and some people like Declan were hesitating to do their presentations till last and how some were experiencing something called creeping death which meant that people were shy to get up on stage something that was common in meetings with studios or companies. We then moved to Georgia's presentations was focused on Double blind which was basically a no win argument within a conversation, or an ideal which was invented in the 1920s and Beth was focused on something called Agent Orange sunset which despite its saying meant something entirely different it was a term used in the Vietnam war in 1951-1961 many years ago. It was a herbicide which demonstrated how politics and economy collapsed and the damage it did to the environment and peoples health which in some cases that lead to death. It was also used in other countries and even used to ruin the Amazon rainforest which I thought was horrible and an environmental disaster.
Beth's research seemed very accurate to me and even linked it to a song called I was only nineteen which from her perspective was a first person account of what had happened because of this, which whilst in appearance didn't make sense it seemed to make a good reference. Her Promarker illustration seemed to communicate this very well too how when the toxins were spread on a rose and how it was decaying and dying and within the rose was the symbol for communism which was a hammer and sickle.
Near to last we had presentations presented by Steven who had a focus on Cognitive Dissonance which seemed to focus on a way to ration their fear by fighting fear with fear whilst another would say it was a cult and his work foccused on a doctor killing people which whilst a little disturbing did seem to make a link to this and even made good references in elements like a rainbow for example or even setting fire to ice which seemed impossible. Holly's presentation was a focus on presupposition and its when you assume some fact at the very beginning of an argument and I could tell she was using some animations from powerpoint in her presentation to communicate her work across, as well as some images as a good example of the word and the best example was the way they interpreted the Flinstones and how they use dinosaurs in modern technology to fit within the caveman theme, which did make sense to me as I assume many things about films and make theories about them and what may happen in the future.
Declan was next to come up and his word was Tabula Rasa which was something that I heard in one of my favourite tv series DC's Legends of Tomorrow. What it basically meant was it was latin for a blank slate and how when we're born we're basically a blank slate beginning to write our own stories and learn new things like a journal as we grow and develop more in our understanding in the world. An example that he did was a storyboard for an animation he was planning to do and how it communicated his point across which seemed rather interesting and it made me think a lot of things and it told me about a phrase that I always wanted to know about having just heard it.
Our final presentation was about Phonological Ambiguity which was basically two words that sound the same such as their, they're and there but each have different meanings. There was no way to get it wrong but what was interesting about it was how we deal with it like "a grey slot in the middle" of them like you were caught between two choices and don't know what to do. In this students presentation she showed a person crouched up between two doors with two choices and not knowing what to do which in my view was the right way to interpret this particular meaning. What I found impressive was how she showed her references and research sources at the end of the presentation.
By lessons end we learned the reason the time frame was introduced to us and it was to build a community between the groups such as asking for guidance or even a steer and even bonding as a group, like I did even knowing I wasn't the only one who lost sleep over this. Johnny was impressed with the way we approached our chosen words in terms of research and how we interpreted our chosen tasks. The point of this was that there was no way to get it wrong but how we deal with this unusual request. We were informed about an opportunity to do some work with a person called Larissa who had live briefs for a BBC animation piece for Children in need and that she was calling out for staff to help her and it would be useful to put ourselves forward as having done work for the BBC on our portfolio was considered an honour and possible give us a placement at a work place. This was something to consider. Otherwise I had enjoyed doing this presentation and I learned a few things about the group even peoples names and how they interpret things and could be helpful a little ways down the line in the three years of the course.
We started the presentation we were informed that there may not be enough time in the session for everyone to do their presentations and it would be continued for next weeks session for those who weren't able to do theirs.
