28/9/17: Intro to creative play briefing and module week 1

The introduction to creative play had begun and we were briefed on the module of this particular subject. In creative play the goal was to work outside our comfort zone and take risks with our ideas and prototypes to try something new not to throw it away but to pursue it further. This looked like a motto that I could live by and while I am anxious at trying new things and taking risks I remembered that in College I had to push myself and take risks, in my work and trying and experimenting new techniques like mixing unusual components such as acrylic inks and clingfilm to create the texture of the sea itself.
In this project we would be doing a theme based on the city and documenting and inventing ideas in our sketchbooks and seeing how we could apply them in animations. In some instances we would be collaborating with the digital media students and even some of the video game students pending on our chosen field. However in this module plagiarism and collusion (asking someone to do it for you) were strictly off limits and we had to invent ideas and pictures so that meant no fan art. There were many activities and workshops, one of particular interest was green screening something that I tried once in a stop motion years ago but couldn't seem to get it right so hopefully I could learn more about it and gain insight.

We watched a couple of animations one of which took one idea and used different types of animation style black and white, 2D animation and 3D animation which I thought was very interesting and how the final animation seemed to make people jump near its climax. Another research source was one of my favourite Looney Tunes cartoon Duck Amuck which showed different painted backgrounds and how the animation was done both drawing and painting.

The overall theme of the module was the city and would be introduced in a special exhibition with the digital media students. This seemed very big and daunting for me as I needed to commit one hundred percent and need to think of a theme and conduct research and sketches. I have a few ideas and may need to do mind maps and go into Manchester for sketching.

We looked at the animation styles of different animators in examples shown to us on the internet, and some of them were very creative in use of media, whilst their story was a bit gruesome at some times and a bit cruel it was their thoughts on creativity. For a group activity we worked in groups to create an idea from two nouns to test our creativity and practice for creative play. Our groups words were meal, ratio and we thought of a serving robot which was inspired by the game Fallout 4 (developed by Bethesda Game studios, released November 10th 2015, ) research source:http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_4

We worked and talked out ideas and sketches and this would be the kind of thing we would be doing with our work and ideas in our sketchbooks as they were our personal development of our characters, theme, settings and inspiration much like I would on many of my own story projects, one I came up with and began developing after this very lesson to try out what I was taught so then I could apply it to my theme work when I go into the city over the next week or over the weekend.

I was slightly anxious about the first few weeks of this module and about our outcomes as it was much to process and I wasn't sure whether I could gain as high a mark in this as I did in college. However I didn't work so hard back then just to doubt myself and quit as creative thinkers and animators we must look past the obstacles in front of us and strive for success. Which is what I intend to do.
